BREAKING - IOC STATEMENT; IOC decision on Russia's participation in Rio postponed

Via the Artistic Gymnastics group on vk.com

Statement from the IOC.  VERY IMPORTANT TO READ.  Participation on an individual or country basis has still to be decided based on legal considerations.  Administrative sanctions such as the removal of competitions from Russia are just some of the interim measures.

No indication of when the decision about participation will be taken.

IOC decision on Russia's participation in Rio will not be made until the weekend, says TASS.  http://tass.ru/en/sport/889324

All my thoughts are with our gymnasts.  Stay strong, team.

  3. WOW. Some of the provisional measure seem very damning.

    * The IOC will not organise or give patronage to any sports event or meeting in Russia.
    * The IOC will not grant any accreditation to any official of the Russian Ministry of Sport or any person implicated in the IP Report for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad Rio 2016.
    * The IOC asks all International Olympic Winter Sports Federations to freeze their preparations for major events in Russia, such as World Championships, World Cups or other major international competitions under their responsibility, and to actively look for alternative organisers.

    1. Vitaly Mutko won't be travelling to Rio.

Otherwise, I feel really sorry for the gymnasts. It must be almost impossible to train sensibly without knowing where you will even be in less than a week's time.

    2. The chart I saw in the report did not show Gymnastics as one of the sports. SO hopefully that will be a big bonus in the girls favor.

The biggest sports federation on that chart was Athletics, which has already issued their ruling. Weightlifting was a close 2nd and I know they were waiting for this report to make their ruling. It then dropped off substantially to the 3rd sport on the list, wrestling.

I think each sports federation should make their own rulings here.

    3. Vitaly Mutko has been a complete disaster for Russian sports, if he isn't directly involved in this awful doping scandal, most likely he turned a blind eye for it, and now this mess is screwing with the athletes lives and he is just spineless. I heard he met the gymnasts yesterday...at this point I wouldn't even get close to him. Yikes. Russia will take many years to recover from this huge moral damage, and the athletes will suffer most. :(

    4. I know! They won't get rid of him because he has heavy ties to FIFA and Russia is hosting the next World Cup in 2018. But it is going to drag every other sport down even further because other organizations have made it more than clear they want him gone before they can start cooperating with Russia.

  4. oh boy… if worse comes to worse I hope Aliya Mustafina could compete individually at the Olympics , question is would she want to , and would Russia let her?

Russian gymnasts to apply for neutral status

Gymnastics has lost some of its appeal over the past few years, whilst Russian athletes have been out of competition.  This might be an unpopular opinion, but it reflects the reality of international gymnastics without around a quarter of its leading protagonists.  The international competitive field has not raised its performance in the absence of Russia's leadership; gymnasts from the top ten or fifteen have floated upwards in the ranks to fill gaps in the medal placements, and we see mediocre performances gaining gold, silver and bronze medals.  Gymnastics has lost some of its imagination and vision without Russian athletes. This doesn't detract from the efforts of the world's best gymnasts.  Gymnastics quite simply needs the special abilities of Russian athletes to provide competition for our international contenders and drive the sport to ever greater things.  In particular, artistry has been almost entirely lost without Russian athletes to provide a good e...

No Paseka for Russia in Berne

Barely two weeks will elapse before the WAG European Championships begin in Berne, Switzerland, and the news we had been fearing has been confirmed : world vault gold medallist Maria Paseka is  off the Russian team while she nurses a back injury.  This leaves Russia significantly weakened for the coming competition, with co-star Viktoria Komova also missing from the line-up.  It is a little disappointing, but it seems the right decision to rest the gymnasts so that they can be at their best when and where it really matters. Who will replace Paseka?  Valentina Rodionenko says that the youngster Natalia Kapitonova, who trains in Penza, has been chosen on the basis of her solid performances at national championships.  Well, we will have to wait and see - these announcements often turn out to be unreliable.   I personally would prefer to see the dynamic Seda Tutkhalyan be given a chance at this level, but Kapitonova has certainly shown herself to be more reliab...

Viktoria Komova - apology

Viktoria wrote some hasty words last night in the heat of the moment.  We all have such times, when hurt feelings lead us to behave uncharacteristically.  It is not important what she said; it is important that Vika has reflected and wants us all to read this message which she published on VK.com this morning. "Dear friends! I want to apologize for my statements about American girls, about drugs, all my words were spoken on emotions. Of course I haven't any proof and didn't really mean it and so on... I am so sorry. I want to apologize for my character to all of you". Vika, we are still with you every step of the way.
