Russia - European Team Champions

Congratulations to Russia!  A gold medal in the team Championships.  First in Europe with a thoroughly  outstanding team effort.


Britain performed well, too, but had a few errors on rings and vault.  It would have been even closer if both teams had avoided error!

I want to think specially well of Ukraine, too.  A few days before the Championships, nobody knew if they could come.  The FIG rightly helped their Federation to travel to Bulgaria - and now they have a bronze medal!


After the battle - tired, but happy.

    Good Job for the men!!! First time in a while they hadn't choked in the finals. Hopefully this will give them the confidence needed to stay consistent.

    Congrats to all those who participated in the top 8.

    Good job to the Russians! I am very happy for them. Although, I must say, I am even happier for the Ukraine! It made me so sad when I heard that the Ukraine, a country with a great gymnastics history, might not make it to the European Championships. I am so glad that the men have a bronze medal to show for their trouble, especially after the disaster two years ago.

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Svetlana Boginskaya, 15 years old, with her medals from the Seoul Olympics Nico translates the latest interview with gymnastics legend Svetlana Boginskaya, during a recent visit to her home country of Belarus. The National Olympic Committee of Belarus held a press conference with three-time Olympic Champion in artistic gymnastics, Svetlana Boginskaya. The meeting was devoted to the 25th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Seoul. In South Korea the Belarussian won two gold medals in the team competition and vault. World rankings - Kalmykova leads AA, FX

Even though I donā€™t trust scores as a way of ranking gymnasts - especially not when cross-competition comparison is concerned - I found this data from the Gymternet interesting.   Itā€™s still early in the year and many gymnasts have not yet competed.  Necessarily, all of the Russia scores are from domestic - and domestic junior - competitions.  Iā€™m surprised to see them faring so well in a world listing.  Kalmykova is leading AA.  Russian floor workers are back at the top. If Stretovich is right and the sanctions continue for another ten years, such notional thinking may be all we have, even if the Russian gymnastics system holds up and continues producing more elite athletes.
