Coach Elfimov: Komova is preparing all around

In a Sports Express interview with Elena Vaitsekhovskaya, coach Gennadi Elfimov has confirmed that he and Komova are working together, thus confounding rumours that they had split up for good.  He says that Viktoria is preparing all around for the European Games in Baku, which will take place in June this year.

  1. That's a good news, she has a lot to prove as an AA player, missed her gymnastics so much ...
Hope you all the best Vika

  2. Is it so wrong, after all that's happened up till now, that I am a bit skeptical and pessimistic about the outcome? I wish her luck all the same. If she wants to go the all around route, it will be the type of all arounder that can put up a decent, reliable score on anything for the team, and nothing too amazing except maybe on bars. That is all I see Vika capable of. And that's totally fine.

  3. I am not terribly optimistic about Vika's return after so much time (and I never was very optimistic even in 2013) but I think her continuing to train AA is still a good thing. If nothing else it makes her much more valuable for the team, if she can fill in on all events if necessary, especially since the current Russian team has quite a few specialists and not many strong AAers. It is good that Elfimov and Vika are still working together, as it would probably be a very big change at this late stage in the Olympic cycle for Vika to be working with a new coach. I hope she proves me wrong and comes back as a successful AAer.

  4. I was pleasantly impressed with the sneak peak of Komova's AA progress in Hungary. She was extremely powerful on floor, easily could have upped the difficulty on her passes. And a double twisting yurchenko is surely in the works for the upcoming European Games in Baku. If she's healthy, despite the disappointing last two years, I don't think she should be ruled out of at least a reasonable come back.

Russian Gymnastics Federation withdraws AIN athletes from competition

An official announcement, via VK.  Google translate. Official statement of the Russian Gymnastics Federation All Russian athletes representing artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, who received "neutral status", decided to refrain from participating in the upcoming competitions under the auspices of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). The reason for this decision is the numerous unfounded and biased refusals of the FIG special committee to allow our gymnasts to compete. The Russian Gymnastics Federation respects and shares the position of the athletes. President of the Russian Gymnastics Federation Oleg Belozerov: "I respect the athletes' decision and understand what it is dictated by. At our meeting on March 10, Mr. Watanabe said that "I would like to use all my strength to once again think about the role of sport in this world. The tragic end for Russian gymnastics

Russian gymnasticsā€™ recent decision to withdraw its neutral athletes from international competition, as a protest over some offence or other, is highly uncharacteristic.   Only a few weeks ago, Russia was welcoming FIG President Watanabe into its gymnastics homes, with smiles and hugs exchanged at the highest level.   The gymnasts, including especially Angelina Melnikova, have been training assiduously for a return to the international arena.   There have been excited announcements of the names of those returning to our world of gymnastics.   Russian gymnastics has always been friendly, international and diplomatic.   Good sportsmanship is required of athletes and is generally shown, with a few notable exceptions.   During the depths of the Cold War, Russiaā€™s teams toured the world, staging friendship displays and offering workshops and training.   Russian officials have been at the heart of the sportā€™s governance since the early 1990s and r...
