Coach Elfimov: Komova is preparing all around

In a Sports Express interview with Elena Vaitsekhovskaya, coach Gennadi Elfimov has confirmed that he and Komova are working together, thus confounding rumours that they had split up for good.  He says that Viktoria is preparing all around for the European Games in Baku, which will take place in June this year.

  1. That's a good news, she has a lot to prove as an AA player, missed her gymnastics so much ...
Hope you all the best Vika

  2. Is it so wrong, after all that's happened up till now, that I am a bit skeptical and pessimistic about the outcome? I wish her luck all the same. If she wants to go the all around route, it will be the type of all arounder that can put up a decent, reliable score on anything for the team, and nothing too amazing except maybe on bars. That is all I see Vika capable of. And that's totally fine.

  3. I am not terribly optimistic about Vika's return after so much time (and I never was very optimistic even in 2013) but I think her continuing to train AA is still a good thing. If nothing else it makes her much more valuable for the team, if she can fill in on all events if necessary, especially since the current Russian team has quite a few specialists and not many strong AAers. It is good that Elfimov and Vika are still working together, as it would probably be a very big change at this late stage in the Olympic cycle for Vika to be working with a new coach. I hope she proves me wrong and comes back as a successful AAer.

  4. I was pleasantly impressed with the sneak peak of Komova's AA progress in Hungary. She was extremely powerful on floor, easily could have upped the difficulty on her passes. And a double twisting yurchenko is surely in the works for the upcoming European Games in Baku. If she's healthy, despite the disappointing last two years, I don't think she should be ruled out of at least a reasonable come back.

Melnikova withdrawn from Bundesliga

Angelina Melnikova has issued a statement about her participation in the Bundesliga.     The mayor of Chemnitz has withdrawn the gymnast’s invitation to participate in the final.     Angelina’s words: ‘I didn't receive an invitation to the Bundesliga final. Unfortunately, the public attention and political discussions were much greater than the organizers expected. I am grateful to TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz for the opportunity to participate in the semi-finals and, most importantly, for their respectful and kind attitude. In Germany, I received tremendous support from spectators, athletes, coaches, and referees. A sports arena is a place where athletes meet each other and demonstrate their abilities in their favorite sport. Sport provides the opportunity to showcase the results of their hard work and athletic prowess. Everyone deserves equal opportunities in all areas of life, and every athlete deserves to compete equally in the sports arena and fulfill their dr...

Remembering last summer - Nelli Kim, her judges and Viktoria Komova

In view of Nelli Kim's recent interview , Lupita and I thought it timely to revisit the performance of some of the WTC President's judges over past competitions ... this article from 27th August 2012 is reposted here, as a reminder. You will find a link to the FIG's newly published book of results at the Olympic Games here .  This year, they have broken down the judge's execution scores so you can see exactly how each judge evaluated the gymnasts' performances.  It makes for interesting reading - if only I had more time to analyse each judge's marking.  A skim reading already highlights multiple inconsistencies in individual judges' marks and makes you wonder why they bother with the jury at all. I have taken the time to look at the reference judges' scores for the top four in the women's all around.  The FIG explains here what their role is, and how they are selected.  I even used my calculator, which is a risky thing in my hands.  M...

Breaking news - Stretovich in, Ignatyev out

Valentina Rodionenko earlier today confirmed that Ivan Stretovich will take the place of Nikita Ignatyev on the main Russian gymnastics team.  19 year old Stretovich, from Novosibirsk, Siberia, is Russian Cup champion on the pommel horse and high bar.  His first major senior competition was the 2014 World Championships where he performed on pommels only.  Stretovich was originally selected as a reserve and the decision to bring him onto the main team was based on his superior performance quality compared to Ignatyev, according to Rodionenko. For the women, the news is that Angelina Melnikova is recovering well from the hamstring injury she aggravated at one of the final control competitions at Round Lake.  Valentina says that she is back to training her full routines again.   Sources - MAG - http://rsport.ru/rio2016_gymnastics/20160802/1011352078.html WAG - http://rsport.ru/rio2016_gymnastics/20160802/1011409100.html New - video of the girls training, ...
