'We were pleasantly surprised' - Rodionenko, Alfosov on final preparations for Nanning

Russia's gymnastic teams are now (Friday night, 26 September) airborne, on the long journey from Moscow to Nanning.  As the crow flies, the distance they will cover is some 6,729 km.  The flight will last about twelve to fifteen hours.  When they arrive, the temperature in Nanning will be a sub-tropical 32 degrees, compared to the autumnal high of around 16 in Moscow.  Nanning time is four hours ahead of Moscow.  The gymnasts, and the coaches, will be fighting jet lag, tiredness and stiff joints by the time they reach their destination.  If they are anything like me, they will feel the need for a good long shower, a cup of tea and a nice quiet nap.  The work out can wait till tomorrow.

Knowing the nature of gymnastics, they won't get the nap, though, and the work out will be today if time allows.  The gymnasts will have precious little time to acclimatise themselves before podium training begins, for the men on Tuesday and for the women on Wednesday.  For the women, there is that subdivision 1 start, meaning that effectively their qualification, and corresponding podium training efforts will begin at what might still feel like 5 in the morning to them.  By the following Wednesday, assuming they qualify to team finals, they will be competing until 6 in the evening.   There will be a change in diet, water, living conditions and schedule for them all.  It makes you realise how demanding the life of a top class elite athlete is, aside all the training, long hours and pain.

As part of the usual pre-Worlds press round, both Valentina Rodionenko and Valery Alfosov have been speaking about how things have been going in the Russian camp, and what the next steps are after the team arrives in Nanning.

'On the 24th September we had our last control training', says Valentina.  'Both boys and girls competed well, with dignity ... we were pleasantly surprised by the girls ... well done!  Frankly, we did not expect as much of them.  Now, it is important that the girls do not waver in China.  It will be the first time in a major senior competition for four of them.  I also want to note that the older girls are not as nervous as they used to be ...

Below, newcomer to the Russian senior team at Worlds, Alla Sosnitskaya trains a Cheng vault in final training before departure for Nanning.

'We have a week in China before the competitions begins ... we are doing everything to make sure that the gymnasts remain calm.  Don't make any crazy demands of them ... just allow them to show what is ready.  A lot depends on nerves, and the main job for this week is to remove as much stress as possible.  ...

'We will acclimatise during the first week.   ... Our doctors know everything, and we have brought everything with us that we need'

Ivan Stretovitch is one of two young 'Cubs' on the team
'The mood on the men's team before leaving for the World Cup in China is good business', said Valery Alfosov.   'The boys have completed their entire work plan, they have trained well, I have no complaints. Everyone is working within their capabilities. Now, after arrival in China, everything depends on acclimatization and how well gymnasts mentally tune into the competition itself ... We are just looking to remain calm ...

'The older guys talk very kindly to the newcomers on the team, I am sure that they feel comfortable, there is no friction between the young and the old.  The guys tried very hard in training. In the men's team, two years after the Olympic Games this is something like a change of generationWe have the 'Cubs'. The time always comes when young gymnasts have to appear on the senior podium for the first time, and I hope that at this World Championships they show their skill and ability with dignity.'

  1. OMG!!! I can't Alla Sosnitskaya is competing a cheng!!! That is solo IMPRESSIVE! I don't, for a second think she would even be remotely close to this High level of difficulty vault, let alone execute so well.
I hope she is able to preform is at Nanning for EF and TF

  2. A good thing for those who wrote that Sosnitskaya is just an average gymnast.
And for those who write that Rodionenko is not a good coach. He has been coaching vault with her and she announced the Cheng after Euros.

    1. Yes...lets just not be too excited with those improvements just yet. We might not see them at worlds this, the coaches have a plan for 2015/2016 half of the quad so all the upgrades the girls have been training might just be performed next years.

    2. Hmmm... I don't know. The Russians seem to be trying too hard to increase their difficulty, which is good, but perhaps some of the girls aren't ready for it yet. I love Sosnitskaya but I don't want her Cheng to be like Paseka's Amanar--- a nightmare almost every time it's performed. Doing it well in training and doing it well in competition are two different things.

  3. Lets hope for the best and pleasant surprises. I see her leg wrapped in the video though. Good luck boys and girls.

‘We all love her very much’ - Roschina speaks of Mustafina and the need to perfect an Amanar vault

From sport.ru via vk.com.  Google translate  A big interview with Anastasia Loginova from Sport24 with Lyudmila Roshchina following the Strongest Cup, where the gymnast won four out of five gold medals. We quote several fragments, the full version is available on the publication's website, link at the end. ❓ The Strongest Athletes Cup has recently ended. Did you have time to analyze your performances? 💬 I just rewatched the broadcast, looked at my shortcomings. ❓ Did you set a medal plan for this start? 💬 I didn't think about it. Only that I needed to do my program - and then what will happen. ❓ Did you have time to discuss the competition with your coach? 💬 She praised me, said that I was great. She didn't scold me for mistakes on the beam - on the contrary, she supported me. ❓ Can we say that the beam is your weak spot? This is the only final you didn't get to. 💬 Probably yes. I have this apparatus that is a bit unpolished, so to speak. Treacherous. I need to work...

Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...

AA Champion Liudmilla Roschina targets Olympic gold

Liudmilla is the first gymnast of the new generation to win AA in the most important international competition in Russia.  The Krasnodar born gymnast was at one time said to be the favourite of head coach of the junior team, Aliya Mustafina.   Source: gymnastics group on VK.com.  Google translate Lyudmila Roshchina shone at the "Strongest Athletes Cup" in artistic gymnastics in Moscow.  🔝 The 17-year-old gymnast became the absolute champion in the all-around and in individual disciplines, winning the vault, parallel bars and floor exercises!  "I am very pleased. There were small mistakes, but they did not prevent me from showing a decent result. I liked the atmosphere of the competition, the full stands helped when I went out on the apparatus. I love all the apparatus, but especially the parallel bars. And, of course, it was interesting to test myself against foreign rivals. In September, the Russian Championship will be held, I want to perform there at ...
