Update - BBC TV coverage, WAG European Gymnastics Championships

More information is now available about the BBC's coverage of the upcoming European Championships. In addition to the red button transmissions which I listed earlier (details repeated below) there is now also terrestrial TV on BBC1 on Saturday 19th May.


Red button :

Saturday 12th May 14.00 - 16.30 European Team Gymnastics

Sunday 13th May 12.45 - 16.30 European Team Gymnastics (12.45-16.00 on Freeview)

BBC1 :

Saturday 19th May, 14.30 - 16.30

Do please check these details in your local guides and make sure you are not missing out; they may be incomplete, or the timings may change.  I'm afraid that the information given on the BBC website is minimal - I will take a guess that the red button on Saturday and Sunday will cover Team Finals (Saturday) and EF (Sunday) live.  There may be some repeats or highlights factored in, explaining the rather long duration on the Sunday.

The BBC's website does not suggest that the live red button programmes will be available terrestrially and I would be grateful if you could keep your eyes open for this and post updates in comments - I will be doing the same!

The Saturday 19th May coverage will most probably be a two hour highlights package.

You will find a link to the FIG's newly published book of results at the Olympic Games here .  This year, they have broken down the judge's execution scores so you can see exactly how each judge evaluated the gymnasts' performances.  It makes for interesting reading - if only I had more time to analyse each judge's marking.  A skim reading already highlights multiple inconsistencies in individual judges' marks and makes you wonder why they bother with the jury at all. Aliya Mustafina - 'I'm just trying to stay healthy'

A brief interview with the World and Olympic Champion from All Sport is summarised below. Russian national gymnastics continues to prepare for the World Championships, which will be held October 3-12 in Nanning (China). Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina told Mary Staroverova about her health and about preparations for the competition. - In June, I went to Germany to solve the problem with my ankle.  I had a small operation to clean the joints of a build-up of bone particles.  Nothing serious was evident, and the operation went well.  Now I have to tumble.  But there is still some discomfort, a slight pain at full load, and I can not tumble at full force.  For the time being, I try to go easy on my legs.  After the Russia Cup I will have to fully prepare for Worlds. Paseka back in time for Rio; Komova confirmed out

A few sources in the Russian press have reported Russia's team news.  There is a little bit more information about Viktoria Komova's retirement, or rest break, and some good news about Maria Paseka. The news came clearly from Viktoria's own mouth - I cannot link to the video - and has now been repeated and clarified by her father.  Viktoria has stopped training because of the pain in her back.  There is no chance of her making it to Rio now but if she recovers she may come back later.   Valentina Rodionenko says unequivocally that Vika has retired, but this doesn't have to be taken as a contradiction, just a simpler version of the picture.  (I personally think that retirement is probably right - but why say never?  However, I would feel sorry for Viktoria if she were not being allowed to make her own decisions.)
