Universiade 2015, Gwangju - live streaming

The Russian artistic gymnastics teams are now safely at home in the athletes village at Gwangju, and the competition begins tomorrow.  The really good news for us is that we'll be able to watch all the action live for free online.  Check the schedule and register at http://www.livefisu.tv/live?ICID_HOM_TOP_1

There are team, all around and event finals.  Russia's top gymnast present will be Olympic medallist and European Champion, Maria Paseka, who is captaining the women's team in Gwangju.  The men's competition will be favoured by the presence of Ukrainian Oleg Verniaiev who is fresh from his victories at the European Games in Baku.  I hope he can maintain his health through the many competitive starts he is working on this year.  The funding of the Ukrainian programme is very poor and Oleg does not benefit from the financial rewards or medical support provided to his Russian and Azerbaijani colleagues.

Good luck to all the teams!

Men's team, left to right - Alexei Rostov, Daniil Kazachkov, Kirill Potapov, Andrei Cherkasov, Mikhail Kudashov

Women's team, left to right - Daria Elizarova, Ekaterina Kramarenko, Maria Paseka, Alla Sidorenko, Polina Fyodorova

With thanks to the gymnastics group on VK.com for the pictures

NOTE ADDED 4/7 People are having trouble finding the live streaming.  If you follow the link given in the post this schedule comes up in the UK.  Scroll down to see the artistic gymnastics team preliminaries which I see as starting at 12.15.  I am assuming this will adjust to your local time but I could be wrong.  If this is BST it means the streaming is of the final subdivision when the Russian WAG will compete.  But I am only human and may have this wrong!  You can see the countdown.

FURTHER NOTE. In the US, the Games are being covered by ESPN.  Look under Upcoming Events, then International, then scroll down to Universiade.  The link is

  1. In a recent interview Oleg Vernyaev confessed that Ukrainian gymnasts are basically self-supporting. He added, "You know, at every competition the guys from Azerbaijani or Russian teams give us medicines. They know our situation. Those who moved to Azerbaijan, Oleg Stepko, for one, help us in any way they can. Gymnastics shoes, athletic tape and other necessary things."

  2. FYI - the FISU stream isn't showing any live events for artistic gymnastics. I used the above link and selected artistic gymnastics from the drop down menu. It says "Sorry, no live events available." I registered to see if that would make a difference. It does not. Rhythmic Gymnastics will be streamed live, but no Artistic Gymnastics unless it is on the daily highlights.

    1. For some reason the sport by sport guide isn't showing gymnastics - but if you go to the daily guide it is there. In the uk coverage of quals begins at just after midday. Always hoping I have read it right!

    2. It doesn't show up in the daily schedule either, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Would you mind sharing the irect link to the daily schedule, please? Thank you!!

    3. You are not the only one with this problem! Please see the note and screenshot I have added in the post above which I hope will help you to have hours of fun in Gwangju, virtually!

    4. This is so strange. In the US, the Team Preliminary is completely missing from today's schedule. Bummer :/

    5. Well, worst case scenario follow the scores here - http://m.gwangju2015.com/sport-schedule-day/?pageNo=1&the_day=07.04&disp_cd=GA&noc=

Perhaps you should try another browser - I have colleagues in the US who evidently can see the artistic gymnastics ... Unless in your State there is a pay to view channel airing the gymnastics, I do not see why it would be excluded.

Hey HO. That is enough broadcast controversy for today. Enjoy!

  3. Does anyone know if Paseka will be doing AA or just be a specialist?

    1. Fyodorova and Elizarova are doing AA. Paseka is doing vault, bars and perhaps floor.

Tatyana Nabiyeva on work and love in China

Some highlights from a long interview with 2010 World champion Tatyana Nabiyeva.  Source: Russian team page on VK.com.  Translation - Google translate A big interview with Tatyana Nabieva about the peculiarities of work and life in China, the bright years of her sports career, a little about modern gymnastics and about love. On the Nabiyeva flight — At the same championship, you presented a new element on the bars, which was later added to the rules with your last name (flying over the top bar with a straight body, difficulty group F. — Sport24). How did you come up with the idea to try something new? — Actually, it happened spontaneously, I think. We worked with Vera Iosifovna [Kiryashova] on the purity of the elements on the bars, sometimes I didn’t fly all the way to the Shaposhnikova element. Once I didn’t fly all the way to the bars either and stood on my feet between the bars, bending my legs in flight for safety. Then Vera Iosifovna said that this was a different eleme...

Men's team results : Russian national championships

Full results are available here . In summary, 1    Moscow    (Olennikov, Garibov, Gogotov, Bondar, Stolyarov, Ablyazin)    261.55 2    Siberia       (Devyatovski, Pakhomenko, Ignatiev, Cherkasov, Golutsotskov  259.85 3   Central       (Barkalov, Nyudakin, Markelov, Perevoznikov, Bondar, Ignatenkov   255.00 Interesting - Mikhail Bondar appears to have competed for two teams simultaneously here - Moscow and Central - not sure how this works but quite pleased with myself for noticing it ;-)  Only his high bar score counted for the Central team.  One of the wonderful mysteries of Russian gymnastics.  Hopefully we'll have the women's team results later.  And perhaps I'll discover something even more wondrously mysterious there.  Who knows.

Who needs difficulty? Portraits of a young gymnast - Ivan Stretovich

These pictures of young Ivan Stretovich, taken by Elena Mikhailova at last week's European Gymnastics Championships, are available in a gallery at the Russian Gymnastics Federation website.  I wanted to share a sequence of them with you. Stretovich turns 16 in October, and comes from Novosibirsk in Siberia, where he is coached at the Dynamo club by B Konvissar.  This young gymnast emerged at April's Russian Championships, where he took gold or silver medals in every event final except for vault.  In Montpelier, he contributed to the Russian team's silver medal. But pictures speak louder than words, and medals aren't all that matters.  Stretovich's start values (in qualifying 5 (F), 5.1 (PH), 4.8 (SR), 5.4 (V), 5.1 (PB) and 4.9 (HB) leave some room for development, but the special quality of his work is even rarer than a double twisting double back somersault.  That quality is the ability to elevate the simple to a pitch of perfection, and to make the diff...
