Universiade 2015, Gwangju - live streaming

The Russian artistic gymnastics teams are now safely at home in the athletes village at Gwangju, and the competition begins tomorrow.  The really good news for us is that we'll be able to watch all the action live for free online.  Check the schedule and register at http://www.livefisu.tv/live?ICID_HOM_TOP_1

There are team, all around and event finals.  Russia's top gymnast present will be Olympic medallist and European Champion, Maria Paseka, who is captaining the women's team in Gwangju.  The men's competition will be favoured by the presence of Ukrainian Oleg Verniaiev who is fresh from his victories at the European Games in Baku.  I hope he can maintain his health through the many competitive starts he is working on this year.  The funding of the Ukrainian programme is very poor and Oleg does not benefit from the financial rewards or medical support provided to his Russian and Azerbaijani colleagues.

NOTE ADDED 4/7 People are having trouble finding the live streaming.  If you follow the link given in the post this schedule comes up in the UK.  Scroll down to see the artistic gymnastics team preliminaries which I see as starting at 12.15.  I am assuming this will adjust to your local time but I could be wrong.  If this is BST it means the streaming is of the final subdivision when the Russian WAG will compete.  But I am only human and may have this wrong!  You can see the countdown.

    In a recent interview Oleg Vernyaev confessed that Ukrainian gymnasts are basically self-supporting. He added, "You know, at every competition the guys from Azerbaijani or Russian teams give us medicines. They know our situation. Those who moved to Azerbaijan, Oleg Stepko, for one, help us in any way they can. Gymnastics shoes, athletic tape and other necessary things."

    FYI - the FISU stream isn't showing any live events for artistic gymnastics. I used the above link and selected artistic gymnastics from the drop down menu. It says "Sorry, no live events available." I registered to see if that would make a difference. It does not. Rhythmic Gymnastics will be streamed live, but no Artistic Gymnastics unless it is on the daily highlights.

      For some reason the sport by sport guide isn't showing gymnastics - but if you go to the daily guide it is there. In the uk coverage of quals begins at just after midday. Always hoping I have read it right!

      This is so strange. In the US, the Team Preliminary is completely missing from today's schedule. Bummer :/

      Perhaps you should try another browser - I have colleagues in the US who evidently can see the artistic gymnastics ... Unless in your State there is a pay to view channel airing the gymnastics, I do not see why it would be excluded.

      Fyodorova and Elizarova are doing AA. Paseka is doing vault, bars and perhaps floor.

Russia - back to training

Valentina Rodionenko reports that the men's team is in full training at Lake Krugloye. Denis Ablyazin hasn't needed a break and is training 'at full strength' - (and if you subscribe to his Instagram account you will see him practising routines on p bars and high bar). David Belyavski joined training a little late, as he has been abroad on his honeymoon. Maria Paseka is returning to training on the 4th December after taking treatment for a back injury. Rodionenko says that Aliya Mustafina is excused training for the time being - Liubov Baladzhaeva helped with the translation here.  Apparently the gymnasts, as salaried athletes, cannot just take time off without permission from the Federation.  I understand that this means no change to Aliya's competitive status, ie she will not be training or competing for the time being, until such time as she gets bored and decides she wants to make a comeback!  From her Instagram account, Aliya is currently suf...

Pongo’s predictions for Russia MAG in Rotterdam

Pongo is my AI assistant.  Read here his calculations of who might make the best Russian MAG team at the World Championships in October.  Please do feel free to disagree audibly, in the comments and note that Pongo admits, even he makes mistakes.  I don’t generally write such statistical material, so this may be a one off. With apologies for any errors, mine entirely and I wrote the brief.   Yes. I’ve treated this as a genuine team-construction problem , rather than simply taking the six gymnasts with the highest AA scores. For the calculation I used the most recent strong competitive score available for each gymnast: the Spartakiad scores for Yakubov, Novikov and Kisel , and mainly European Championship team-final/final scores for Dukhno, Marinov, Zaika and Sieedin , supplemented by Russian Championship scores where a recent European score was not available. That matters because Dukhno and Marinov, for example, were substantially stronger in Zagreb than some earlier...
