'Support us, believe in us, watch gymnastics' - Komova still has chance for Nanning

The Russian Gymnastics Federation has opened a YouTube channel - such a positive development.  One of the videos you will find is an interview with rising star Maria Kharenkova; she is a lovely, light hearted girl in person, energetic and smiling, different to the serious face she puts on in competition :-).

There is also a news piece on the Russia Cup which I think is quite important as it makes clear that the team selection will not take place until late before the World Championships (I believe they are travelling 27th September), thus giving Viktoria Komova time to work up a contributing beam routine, and, f what team captain Aliya Mustafina says is right, possibly a vault!  Many of you will have seen that Vika took gold on uneven bars at this morning's Russia Cup event finals, ahead of all around champion Aliya Mustafina and European medallist Daria Spiridonova and it will be great to see her take encouragement from this success.

You will find the original video here : http://youtu.be/yLMIWL1Kouw, and I would like to thank Olesya Miheeva who very kindly took the time to write these detailed translations from the video.

Kharenkova: "the atmosphere was good, everyone is always supporting everyone, Aliya is always helping us, she's the team captain, it makes it easier for us".

Aliya: "overall I'm very happy, I thought it'd be worse, because the last competition was very difficult and I was tired and thought it'd be hard to perform today, and it was difficult but I dealt with it"

Komova: "my health overall is good but for now my leg is still hurting because there's been so little time. But I'm gonna try to *jump* (train beam/vault) to get ready for worlds"  "Here they're testing the team that'll perform at Worlds, the girls are trying very hard; they're doing  a good job, even if without me at worlds, I'll be cheering them on"

Aliya: "the team won't be decided until the very last day because no one knows what will happen or if someone will start having pain or get injured; we can't tell"

In regards to Vika, Aliya says "I'm very happy she's returning because she has very strong bars and she'd be great if she got her double Yurchenko back. With that kind of team we could really compete for a place on the podium'

Kharenkova: "I'm trying to make it onto the worlds team and from the Russian Cup, I'm still waiting to earn a medal."

Komova: "support us, believe in us, watch gymnastics"

Aliya: "i wanna wish everyone the best and a huge thank you for your support and I hope that I will continue to make everyone happy/proud"

You will find a full video of today's livestream at http://youtu.be/hINUslaG3xQ.

There is a report of today's competition at the Couch Gymnast http://www.thecouchgymnast.com/2014/08/30/event-finals-bars-beam/

Event finals continue tomorrow at 13.00 Moscow time.  There is a live stream available at www.sportgymrus.ru.

Good luck to all the gymnasts .. Udachi!!

  1. They have my continued support. I just don't want anyone rushing back, if not fully healthy as yet.

We'll see who eventually gets picked for worlds and then cheer for them.

  2. The FIG has contributed to creativity in floor routines. There is a new pose: the stork pose before a tumbling pass.
Besides, gymnasts continue to kill the event with movements that make little sense.

  3. The RGF has changed their mind: Vika will be at Worlds if she can perform a DTY on vault + bars. They may think this is more feasable than a beam routine.

    1. That really isn't me commenting, I guess thats the problem with anonymous...Maybe I should set a google account for this.
As far as I know Vika have been working on beam for over two weeks and have already a routine set. I have no idea if she is working on VT too. If she is still having pain on her foot, obvious working on beam its way easy than work on VT.What I got is that they will not choose the team based on the results here but on the next weeks of training at Round Lake.

  5. They get to bring six gymnasts to Worlds. That leaves some space for an event specialist. Especially when you have a lot of young and inexperienced gymnasts, it would be wise to count on Komova's bar routine. She hasn't been on the stage that much over the past two years, but from what I saw at this Russian Cup, she wants to come back. And whenever she really wants something bad, she's going to hit the routine (London all-around). She looks consistent and might as well get better and better. She's more mature now. Who else are you going to bring? You've got Aliya, Daria, Maria Kharenkova, maybe Nabieva, of course, but who else? Are you going to trust Paseka's vault? Love all the Russian's styles, but Marta Karolyi's right about something---- you gotta hit it when it counts. Komova's looking pretty darn good. She could contribute well on bars at Worlds but I don't think anyone wants to push her ankle. I think they should rethink their two-event rule. Just saying.

Aliya Mustafina - I competed as best I could

Picture credit RGF Aliya speaks in Sports Express http://news.sport-express.ru/2014-05-18/699607 I am very pleased with my performance today, I don't know what the judges didn't like about my bars, but I didn't ask them ... I did my routine fairly well without serious error. On beam I didn't have the start value but I received the highest execution score.  We will try to fix that before the World Championships. Considering the problems I had with my ankle, I think I performed to the optimum at the moment.  I did everything I could. I'm not  the least bit sorry that I performed here -  Very glad that I could help the team. I think my presence made things easier for the girls.   It is very difficult to compete at such serious senior competitions for the first time.  Of course they were very worried.   But I'm sure that with time they will learn to cope easily with their nerves (smiles).

Remembering last summer - Nelli Kim, her judges and Viktoria Komova

In view of Nelli Kim's recent interview , Lupita and I thought it timely to revisit the performance of some of the WTC President's judges over past competitions ... this article from 27th August 2012 is reposted here, as a reminder. You will find a link to the FIG's newly published book of results at the Olympic Games here .  This year, they have broken down the judge's execution scores so you can see exactly how each judge evaluated the gymnasts' performances.  It makes for interesting reading - if only I had more time to analyse each judge's marking.  A skim reading already highlights multiple inconsistencies in individual judges' marks and makes you wonder why they bother with the jury at all. I have taken the time to look at the reference judges' scores for the top four in the women's all around.  The FIG explains here what their role is, and how they are selected.  I even used my calculator, which is a risky thing in my hands.  M...

Does Komova need gymnastics?

Komova - a prodigious talent for performance I have been pondering the nature of gymnastics talent recently, while viewing some videos of 1992 competitions on YouTube - you can find links to them if you like, by visiting RRG's Facebook page. What was it that made the Soviets so outstanding?  In the videos, you will see three champions, side by side, each competing close to perfect routines almost every time they hit the podium.  No sprung floor, no vaulting table, a Code that (1) required compulsory as well as optional routines to be prepared, (2) encouraged innovation in single moves of extreme difficulty, (3) required balanced performances of artistic as well as technical merit, and (4) recognised and rewarded virtuosity.   The three champions I am speaking of each satisfied the Code in different ways: Boguinskaia had unique and incredible grace and amplitude; Lyssenko expressed emotional intensity through an amazing combination of power, difficulty and artistry; Gutsu ...
