Happy Birthday, Evgenia Shelgunova!

Evgenia, a member of the senior national team since 2013, turns 17 today, and posted this lovely picture of herself on Instagram.

It hasn't been an easy journey for Zhenya ... Injury has dogged her early years as a senior, and she is currently in recovery, hoping to return to training in the autumn at the earliest.

Let's give this young and determined gymnast some support and encouragement ... Russia needs her as part of a deep team in preparation for the Rio Olympics.  Good luck, Zhenya!  Have a very happy birthday!  And we wish you all the best as you work towards your chosen future!

    An update - good news - Evgeniya has now been cleared by her surgeon to begin training again - she is very happy!

No Paseka for Russia in Berne

Barely two weeks will elapse before the WAG European Championships begin in Berne, Switzerland, and the news we had been fearing has been confirmed : world vault gold medallist Maria Paseka is  off the Russian team while she nurses a back injury.  This leaves Russia significantly weakened for the coming competition, with co-star Viktoria Komova also missing from the line-up.  It is a little disappointing, but it seems the right decision to rest the gymnasts so that they can be at their best when and where it really matters. Who will replace Paseka?  Valentina Rodionenko says that the youngster Natalia Kapitonova, who trains in Penza, has been chosen on the basis of her solid performances at national championships.  Well, we will have to wait and see - these announcements often turn out to be unreliable.   I personally would prefer to see the dynamic Seda Tutkhalyan be given a chance at this level, but Kapitonova has certainly shown herself to be more reliab...

The Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics is running as a non-partisan candidate. She is running for the post of deputy of the Voronezh City Duma from the 23rd electoral district. Her job title indicates that she is an athlete-instructor of the Russian national artistic gymnastics team.
