Afanasyeva leads Russia Cup All Around qualifications

Veteran artistic gymnast Ksenia Afanasyeva leads the first day of Russia Cup competition in Ekaterinburg, ahead of European champion Anna Dementieva and newcomer to the senior team, Viktoria Komova.  This annual competition will form an important element of the selection process for the national team for autumn's World Championships.  Full individual results can be viewed on the Federation's website.

Afanasyeva is said to be the gymnast on top form at this competition, having fully recovered from an injury she had been carrying for some time.  Viktoria Komova performed extremely well considering she was not initially expected to compete on all four pieces, and achieved the highest score on bars.

Only three of last year's World Championships team - Afanasyeva, Dementieva and Semenova - featured in the top ten here (Semenova, recently returned to Lake Krugloye to begin full training, finished in 7th place).  Tatiana Nabieva competed only vault and bars but seems to have had a bad day, recording a disastrous 12.575 on vault (19th) and relatively low 14.775 on bars (5th).

Newcomer Yulia Belokobylskaya finished in 4th place, showing a consistent contribution throughout the day, while vault and floor specialist Maria Paseka made a credible first call for a place on the worlds team, finishing in 1st place on vault.

The all around final takes place tomorrow at 5.00 pm local time - online streaming video of the competition may be accessible here, trusting that the technology will work.

  1. I'm just joking but maybe Mustafina secretly competed here, hence the (?).

  2. I never had thought of that. You could very well be right. O:-)

Or it could be Grishina and another junior.

  3. Grishina sort of makes sense. If you look in the bottom left of this photo, she is definitely there. The scores make sense for her too.

  4. If we are right, she could well have been in contention for sikver all around. I'll keep my eye on the results and see what confirmation we can get ...

'We were a new team, all the girls are young, and it's their first time in such a serious competition.  I think today we performed to the best of our ability.  Yes, we have had two falls today - on the uneven bars and balance beam.' 'The young girls failed  psychologically, but  the first time you compete on the senior podium - it's not very easy.  No  one is sad.  I  am very pleased with such a performance.  Everything  was fair enough, maybe not everywhere and in all things, but overall it was quite as expected, both our rivals, and the judging.' 'I began to experience more pain in the ankle - continued Aliya Mustafina. - To do the dismounts I had to muster all my strength and clench my teeth.  The coaches have d
