International Gymnast carries as full a set of results from this competition as I can find anywhere, here. The Couch Gymnast also has some links to videos.
The Italians apparently performed excellently to beat out the Romanians, leaving the Russian team in 4th place. The gap between Italy and Romania was but .4, driven principally by superior scores on vault and bars, and a true team challenge based on a very even performance by all gymnasts. While the Italians managed to finish in 2nd, 3rd and 5th places overall, the Romanians had to rely on their top performer, Iordache, to carry them through - Gheorghe finished 11th and Badea a distant 18th. I very much hope that both the Romanians and the Russians can raise themselves from this somewhat disappointing outcome to perform their best in the all around and apparatus finals. The all around competition takes place today.
This result changes the all around prospects quite significantly, with 2 Italians (Fasana and Meneghini) now in 2nd and 3rd place, behind Iordache, but ahead of Rodionova by 1.2 and .6 respectively. Iordache remains the stand out of the individual stakes and isn't likely to be beaten. I'm guessing the silver and bronze will be battled out between Fasana, Meneghini, Rodionova, Kuhm and, technically, Shelgunova. However, there is less than a one point gap between the qualifiers in places 7 to 14 so with the unpredictability of competition it's really difficult to suggest how the final placings will work out.
Apparatus final start lists have also changed quite a bit and the list of Russian qualifiers is now as follows :
Vault
Shelgunova in 4th place with 13.825
Rodionova is 2nd reserve
A Bars
Rodionova - first reserve
Beam
Rodionova
Floor
Rodionova and Shelgunova
Iordache remains top qualifier on beam and floor, is a close third on vault and 4th on bars, not a bad result for a Romanian on this apparatus which has for so long been a relative weakness. Gheorghe managed to qualify to beam final, with Balea making floor.
The only team qualifying two gymnasts to each apparatus final is, predictably, Italy. Romania managed to take 6 qualifying places, the same as Russia, although two Russians are in reserve. Germany qualified 4 gymnasts. I don't know if this really says anything of note - except perhaps it is interesting to reflect on levels of consistency.
