Viktoria Komova and Aliya Mustafina - interviews

At the recent press conference, both Aliya and Vika gave short interviews.  You can finds videos of them and the ROC's website.

Olesya Mikheeva has found time to provide some translations - thank you!!

Aliya's Interview.
ā€œOperation was done on November 3rd, so about 3 weeks ago, so now Iā€™m recovering/rehabilitating until December 7th, Iā€™m not allowed to jump/run/go upstairs, Iā€™m still wearing a cast. This is the last week of this. After that, I will start a more difficult recovery to build muscles, rehabilitate so in February I can get back to jumping. ā€œ

The interviewer asks about her injury and she says she had a meniscus injury. (donā€™t know how to translate the details)

When can you start training again?
ā€œI think Iā€™ll start training again when Iā€™m out of the hospital because Iā€™m still concurrently rehabilitating my back so until the New Year I will be doing that.ā€

The interviewer asks something about the judging and Aliya gives a quote, but Iā€™m not quite sure how to translate it. Then he asks if sheā€™s ever been to Brazil and she says ā€œIā€™ve never been to Brazil, but I want to. Of course I want to.ā€

Viktoria's interview

About herself on the team in 2015:
ā€œWell without saying, this was my best year because I was finally able to compete, in the European Games we took 1st as a team, unfortunately I wasnā€™t able to compete individually because it was only 1 per country, and of course the world championships. Of course the world championships didnā€™t start out too well, in the team competition I performed poorly, thereā€™s not much to hide there, but we finished well, even with gold medals, there were even 4 gold medals, first time in history, that was something incredible.

About returning to the team:
ā€œIt was very difficult to return because I didnā€™t compete for 3 years, those were the very worst years of my life because it was just training and then injuries and there was no more desire because I was preparing and then getting injured right away. I wanted to quit and I tried to quit more than once to be honest, but the Olympics gave me the push to keep going.ā€

Who impacted your decision to keep going or was it just you?

ā€œWell of course my parents and I myselfā€¦. well actually I kind of quit at home, and then Andrey called me and told me to come back right away in 2 days to Lake Krugloye and there I started training slowly and slowly developed a desire again slowly. Also I had fought with my coach and then when I had gotten back into shape I called my coach and said I was ready to work and letā€™s forget about it and so thatā€™s how I got back on the team.ā€

About Olympics in Rio

ā€œI have the moral strength, I want to go there, we could say this is my last chance to go because after that I wonā€™t be able to, Iā€™ll be somewhat old for gymnastics. Well of course I want to hope for the best but I donā€™t want to guess because itā€™s pointless because anything can happen at the Olympics.ā€

On life outside of sport

ā€œI rarely have time outside of sport, but I like to sew.ā€ She continues to talk about details related to sewing or types of sewing Iā€™m not sure that she enjoys. ā€œI like to hang out with friends, go to movies, or just hang out. This year we saw on the internet that there would be a meteor shower and went and watched it which was really cool, out in the open air with friends, what could be better.ā€

What about personal life?
ā€œFor now, just sport, I donā€™t think about personal life for now, first I need to get everything out of sport and then attend to personal life.ā€

  1. Hi Elizabeth - the missing bit of the Aliya interview - it has nothing to do with judging. The interviewer asks, "and was missing the World Championships a good idea considering (judging) that the Olympics is coming up?" and Aliya answers, "I like to hope that whatever happens, it is always for the best."

Via VK.com.  Google translate A big interview with Aliya Mustafina was published on MATCH!. We provide a small excerpt below, and the full version is available on the website at the link below  ā“ Aliya, you are now the head coach of the junior artistic gymnastics team. What does your typical day look like? šŸ’œ My current life is similar to what it was when I was competing. In the morning, I have breakfast and go to work by 9:00, we train for four hours, have lunch, rest and train for another three hours. During the training camp, the athletes live at the base. They live and train on the same territory. ā“ Do you manage the gymnasts' personal trainers or do you evenly distribute the responsibilities? šŸ’œ We work in contact with the personal trainers, I listen to their opinions. For example, if the trainer believes that their athlete needs to be given a little rest or do fewer repetitions of a particular exercise, we do so. ā“ Describe the current generation of children. Russian Gymnastics Federation withdraws AIN athletes from competition

An official announcement, via VK.  Google translate. Official statement of the Russian Gymnastics Federation All Russian athletes representing artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, who received "neutral status", decided to refrain from participating in the upcoming competitions under the auspices of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). The reason for this decision is the numerous unfounded and biased refusals of the FIG special committee to allow our gymnasts to compete. The Russian Gymnastics Federation respects and shares the position of the athletes. President of the Russian Gymnastics Federation Oleg Belozerov: "I respect the athletes' decision and understand what it is dictated by. At our meeting on March 10, Mr. Watanabe said that "I would like to use all my strength to once again think about the role of sport in this world. Sport should unite and give friendship, it should not be a tool for increasing hatred. The rights of every person must be resp...

Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...
