Russia's WAG: Into the Battle

Anna Rodionova will compete in her first Worlds this autumn.

News of Russia's embattled WAG team is now being confirmed in the Russian press, and we are all grateful to Lupita for translating the key points from this article, an interview with team coach Evgeny Grebyonkin.

1)      Dementyeva is not going to retire. She went home and has now decided to continue.
2)      Komova is recovering in hospital (note: I have read elsewhere that she will leave hospital on the 27th September, but won't be able to train for anything up to two or three months).  In a mock competition prior to her illness, she had scored more than 60 points all around.
3)      Afanasyeva will compete in Mexico in November. Surgery went well.
4)      Mustafina has a cold. She has upgraded bars, beam and floor and has added a vault (note: elsewhere, Mustafina's bars D value is said to be 6.7.  Her upgrades on beam come from connections.  Her ability to perform her beam, vault and floor upgrades is dependent on her health.)

5)      Paseka has a back injury of some kind. They don’t know if she is going to compete on two or three events (vault and floor are as certain as can be at this stage; she may not do bars, and in this event Rodionova will perform on the latter apparatus).
6)   Grishina also has a back injury
7)      Rodionova is going to compete (beam and perhaps bars).
8)   Nabieva has also upgraded her vault from a 5.2 D value to a 5.6

There has also been a press tour of Lake Krugloye, of which a picture record is available at the RGF website.  I haven't found any reports of the MAG team's progress yet, but as far as I can tell from these pictures, they are looking competition-fit and impressive.  UPDATE: Belyavski and Kuksenkov have suffered minor injuries ... read a report here.

For the benefit of those in the UK, I have just read that the BBC will be covering Worlds on TV, Radio and online.  Hoorah ... I will post details of the schedule as soon as available.

Lara Mara has found this short news clip of the gymnasts' preparation at Round Lake.

Finally, as I type this a full moon is shining brightly through my window, illuminating my perfect and beautiful black and white cat, Harry, as he chases the moonbeams across the garden.  I am hoping that this forebodes good luck for the Russian gymnasts.  Davai, Rossiya!!!

I have three wishes.  One, that all the gymnasts remain in the best of health; two, that they compete to the best of their ability.  And the third one ... well, that relates to Aliya, and will remain my secret until after the competition is over.

What are your three wishes for the Russians this autumn?

Comments

  1. I wonder what's going to happen with Komova. I love her artistry and her elegance, but she seems to lack the mental toughness to fight her way back after mistakes. If she can become a fiercer competitor, someone who doesn't give up on her routines, then she could shine in Rio.

  2. Dementyeva is not going to retire!!! That's great!

  3. I pray that God will bless the health of Komova, and she can recover as quickly and completely as possible. She can compete again as bright, elegant and smoothly as before!! Oh, God be merciful to her daughter, so young, so fragile.

I also ask God to bless Aliya Mustafina, who has such a strong spirit ... Even operated alquebrada, she had the strength to pursue his dream. She practiced day after day. So I hope she has many victories. She wins again AA, FX UB. She is indomitable.

And finally, I want to see Afan, Dementeyeva, Komova, Aliya, Pasheka, Grishina full health and competing as a team again. And with many victories.

  4. Queen Elizabeth, May you ask to Lupita translate the interview with the new coach of Russian Team, please? I Know it is a lot of work, but I don´t know anything about coach Evgeny Grebyonkin and how he thinks, how he Works, who he had trained before, what plans he have...so, if my petition is possible, I will be huge graceful.

  5. My wishes:

    1. For Aliya to be fierce as ever, strong as ever and put all the drama that's been going on this year behind her, and stick it to everyone. This is just her second worlds, and she has already accomplished a lot. She has the makings of a legend, and now it's time to keep climbing the ladder.

    2. For Viktoria to be patient and not let the setbacks get her spirits down. I think she has a good support system around.

    3. For all of them to get over this bout of viruses and flus and injuries together, and be successful in spite of the mind games and favorites of the Rods.

I'm curious about your third wish, Elizabeth.

Andrei Rodionenko explains Russia's performance at Worlds - Lupitatranslates

Rodionenko with European Champion David Belyavski  Courtesy RGF/Elena Mikhailova This is the interview that many people on the internet have already commented on, regarding Andrei Rodionenko's alleged racism.  The original, Russian language version, appears on VTB Bank's website (VTB are sponsors of Russian gymnastics).  It takes cleverer people than me to decide what is racism, what is deliberately perjorative, and what is inferred in an interviewer's question.  For now, I will not comment on this, therefore, but I would ask you to read Lupita's translation carefully before you form your own opinion.   I am providing some links below which might help you to decide where you stand. Review of Russian WAG at the 2014 World Championships

The Russians during a team talk in training for the World Championships.  Courtesy RGF Bronze all the way for Russia then.  Beyond the euphoria and surprise of this morning's competition there doesn't really seem to be much to write home about. I am delighted for Aliya personally that the efforts she has made to help the team have provided her with some tangible result, but the principal feeling at the end of the competition is that of relief.  As Vaitsekhovskaya said in her article last week, there were no moments of shock and awe from the Russians, and that's what will be needed if they are to compete for gold medals in Rio (translation available here ). Let's consider a timeline of the competition : before, during and after. BEFORE The promise of a return to the Worlds stage by Viktoria Komova gave Russia a feeling of optimism pre-Russia Cup.  However, Viktoria's performance at this important competition gave little reason for celebration.  Ye

Judging Komova and Douglas - like comparing the Mariinsky Theatre ... and a Disco

Lupita translates an article about the women's all around from today's Sovietski Sport. OLYMPICS OR LAS VEGAS CASINO? Aliya and Vika waited for Viktoria’s score for her floor, which closed the AA competition. Gabriella Douglas was completely alone, biting her lips. Douglas was not sure of anything, except that Aliya Mustafina, who stayed in gymnastics like a heroine, had won bronze and Komova…  In this instant it was decided to be, or not to be.  To be Olympic Champion, or not to be Olympic Champion. It’s over.  Vika drops her head on Aliya’s shoulder.  The judges have decided: Douglas! I choose the sentence "Douglas has been named Olympic AA champion".  I can explain when this happened.  It was not when Komova didn’t land her Amanar vault well. Her mistake on vault was not fatal.  It was still possible to make it up. They just didn’t allow her to do so. Douglas performed with pleasure and with luck.  She was overscored for her uneven bars routine
