Aliya Mustafina and Elena Shevchenko - Olympic Champions from CSKA Moscow

2012 Olympic Champion Aliya Mustafina took part in an event yesterday to celebrate the successes of various athletes from her home club in Moscow, the Central Army Club.  You can see her here with 1988 Olympic Champion Elena Shevchenko, and amongst the others are Svetlana Ishmouratova, who won two gold medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics, and Dmitri Sautin, gold medallist in diving at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics.  (Does anyone know who the man on the left is?)

Not all of CSKA's gymnastics heroes were present; most notably Dmitri Bilozerchev who now lives and works in the USA.  Other gymnasts who trained at CSKA but never made it to the Olympics (for reasons of depth, timing and world politics) include Elena Mukhina, Olga Bicherova, Olga Chudina, and Valentin Mogilny.  Their coaches and choreographers include Alexander Alexandrov, Viktor and Irina Razumovsky, Boris Orlov, Raisa Ganina and Mikhail Klimenko.  

It is nice to see the athletes enjoy a lovely day, even if the weather was a bit wet and overcast.  Aliya looks very happy and healthy.

    Look at Mustafina group in VK and you find more photos of Aliya and Elena at CSKA official site ;-) and probably the man is someone from cska officials

The event was held to open a public exhibition, 'Window into Courage', to commemorate the heroic acts of the Russian Army during the Great Patriotic War (WW2) as well as the sporting heroism of the champions we know so well.

    Thanks to Alar for the suggestion - the man to the far left of the picture is Vladimir Markelov. Vladimir won a gold medal with the Soviet team at the 1980 Olympics, and silver in 1976.

Head coach Dmitri Andreev strategises for the coming years.

From April 9th ​​to 12th, the final stage of the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup was held in Croatia. Over the five stages, neutral athletes won 22 medals, nine of which were gold. Dmitry Andreev, head coach of the national artistic gymnastics team, summarized the first half of the international season. Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...
