Universiade - gymnasts arrive in Kazan - Mustafina a question mark

The Gymnastics Centre, Kazan.  It can seat 3,200 spectators.

Russia's gymnasts have arrived in Kazan and are ready to begin their competition on Sunday, with the WAG team final.  The teams travelled there by train, a journey of around eleven hours from Moscow, and the big news is that there is a question mark over the participation of Aliya Mustafina, who has been hospitalised for a short while because of a severe bout of flu.  There are mixed reports as to the likelihood of her participation here: head coach Grebyonkin says she has missed some of her training, but has a high chance of appearing on the podium subject to a medical assessment that will take place soon; state coach Valentina Rodionenko seems less optimistic, but says she will be in Kazan to support her team mates.  Let's just wait and see.

The WAG team includes captain Ksenia Afanasyeva, Anna Dementyeva, Tatiana Nabiyeva, Maria Paseka and Ekaterina Kramarenko.  Afanasyeva (two vaults), Dementyeva and Nabiyeva will compete all around; Kramarenko will do bars, beam and floor, with Paseka competing vault.  The MAG team will be Emin Garibov, David Belyavski, Denis Ablyazin, Nikolai Kuksenkov, Nikita Ignatyev and Mattei Petrov.  There are video interviews with Maria Paseka ('Our team is determined to win') and Denis Ablyazin ('This is one of the most important competitions of the year') on Vesti Sport.

There will be live streaming on Sportbox - assuming that all territories can access this coverage, it will be a great way of following the competition.  There is also a video hub on the Universiade website - we can see from the schedule there the timing of the transmissions of the various competitions.

Edited 3/7 : Kaleylovesgymnastics (thank you) says that live streaming in the English language will be available here.  You will need to register, but it is free!!

Details of the competition schedules (including warm ups and so on) is to be found here.  All times are local to Kazan, and subject to change so check regularly.

Fingers crossed - I would love to see Afanasyeva win an all around gold, and I think the Universiade is the right competition for this.

Svetlana Boginskaya: I was always a bitch* in gymnastics

Svetlana Boginskaya, 15 years old, with her medals from the Seoul Olympics Nico translates the latest interview with gymnastics legend Svetlana Boginskaya, during a recent visit to her home country of Belarus. Svetlana Boginskaya: I was always a bitch* in gymnastics, so now I ask for forgiveness from everyone who came in contact with me. The National Olympic Committee of Belarus held a press conference with three-time Olympic Champion in artistic gymnastics, Svetlana Boginskaya. The meeting was devoted to the 25th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Seoul. In South Korea the Belarussian won two gold medals in the team competition and vault. As a gift to the Olympic Hall of fame, the famous gymnast, now living in the United States, donated one of her trophies that she won at the 1990 European Championships and a pennant for Best Female Athlete of the USSR in 1989. Natalia Yurchenko - an exclusive interview

Natalia wins gold at the World Championships in Budapest, 1983 1983 World Champion Natalia Yurchenko speaks directly to readers of RRG in this exclusive interview.    Early years: In the summer of 1976, at the age of 11, I was accepted to a sports boarding school in Rostov-on-Don. I remember it was a 4-level building with the cafeteria on the first floor, academic classrooms on the second floor, rooms for girls on the third floor and rooms for boys on the fourth floor. There was one TV on the ground floor and the kids who stayed at school over the summer (about 20-30 kids), were able to watch the Olympics. Nadia Comaneciā€™s outstanding performance made us feel jealous because usually the Soviets were the unbeatable favorites. We did feel some relief with amazing performances from Nellie Kim and Ludmilla Tourischeva. Besides Ludmilla, there was a gymnast from Rostov-on-Don, Svetlana Grozdova! And, we were really thrilled to see the very little and cute Maria Fi...
