Russia WAG win Gymnix International Junior Cup

Maria Bondareva, courtesy of RGF

Russia's charming young gymnasts, Maria Bondareva, Anastasia Dmitrieva, Polina Spirina and Ekaterina Sokova, knocked out the rest of the competition with their artistry in Montreal this weekend.  Bondareva and Dmitrieva shared the all around title.  The team beat Canada and Japan by a narrow margin.

These girls are not yet performing work of outstanding difficulty, but it is a pleasure to watch their gymnastics, particularly Bondareva on beam who has such confidence and authority.  You can find top five AA results below, full results are available at Gymnix International - team results link is not working properly at the moment but you may find them later.  There is a start list for today's event finals - Bondareva and Dmitrieva are qualified to vault, bars and beam, with Bondareva appearing on floor with Sokolova.  Good luck girls, and well done so far!

There is a Youtube channel (thanks Lisa!) with good videos of the Russians' routines for you to enjoy.

Neutral athletes will compete in the Russia Cup, says Valentina Rodionenko

All Russian gymnasts who received neutral status intend to promptly fly to Novosibirsk after the end of the World Cup stage in Qatar to take part in the Russian Cup. This was reported to TASS by the senior coach of the Russian national team Valentina Rodionenko. In addition to Melnikova, the list of Russian participants in the April stages of the World Cup in artistic gymnastics includes Kirill Prokopyev, Vladislav Polyashov, Ilya Zaika, Grigory Klimentyev, Alena Glotova and Zlata Osokina. šŸ’¬"All our athletes plan to compete in the Russian Cup in Novosibirsk after participating in the World Cup stages," Rodionenko said. "The World Cup stage in Qatar will end on April 19, the official training in Novosibirsk is scheduled for April 22. When we declared gymnasts for the World Cup stages, the athletes all said that the Russian Cup was a priority start for them. And they are doing the right thing, because a lot will depend on the performance in Novosibirsk." šŸ“tass.ru/sp...

Oksana Omelianchik - the importance of choreography

Photo source : http://www.tomtheobald.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=330 I came across this journal article by joint World Champion 1985, Oksana Omelianchik.  Oksana is a senior judge at major FIG competitions under her married name of Oksana Omelianchik-Ziurkalova. She analyses eight floor routines of the Ukrainian women gymnasts, and draws conclusions regarding the composition of floor routines, and the importance of choreography in floor exercise. I like her review of the importance of choreography to the sport: 'In choreographic training of female gymnasts aesthetic, physical and educational tasks are solved. Aesthetic tasks mean cultivation of musical sense and horizon, training of movement under music; physical ā€“ mean development of coordination, flexibility, plasticity, expressiveness and accuracy of movements; educational tasks mean psychological relaxation, cultivation of ability to feel, think, remember and estimate culture of movements [3, 4, 10]. Why on earth do I keep this blog?

I had to ask myself this question, this morning, after receiving a pretty nasty comment on my post about yesterday's floor final.  I usually make it a rule not to publish rude, poorly argued, unpleasant or profane comments; I went against that principle.  I trust that whoever 'wrote' that comment is highly embarrassed.  I can't imagine that she or he would speak like that to anyone in person. It is an unfortunate fact of life that the wider internet - social media - encourages the covert, cowardly bullying that is often disguised as argument and opinion on the various gym forums.  Some of the people posting there just don't know how to regulate their behaviour, and moderation can only work retrospectively.  I wish people would think before they post ... would YOU like to read something so rude?  Disagreements are allowed, and you don't have to like someone's writing style, but good manners cost nothing and are at the heart of a civilised society. ...
