WAG Voronin Cup results, 2012

Fan favourite Anna Dementyeva took three golds in Moscow this December

The Russian Gymnastics Federation has now published the full results of this competition which I will  reproduce below (WAG first, MAG in a separate post).

I think the most significant outcomes are the junior women where Evgeniya Shelgunova, who turns senior next year, took the gold in the all around and beam.  Maria Kharenkova, who will train with the seniors next year but won't have senior competitive eligibility till 2014, also rounded out the year nicely with a silver in the all around and a the gold medal on floor.

It is good to see Dementyeva pick up some gold (gold all around in the senior competition, and gold on bars and beam where she scored 15.6 with an SV of 6.6).  With Anna Pavlova taking silver in the all around and golds on floor and vault, this must have been a pretty competition to watch.  Olympic team members Komova and Mustafina were present and appeared on individual apparatus, though as exhibition performances.  I wonder though why Moscow-based Anastasia Grishina did not compete?

    To be fair, none of the Olympic participants didn't compete, Aliya and Komova did bars but I haven't seen anything about Ksenia or Maria either, unless I am mistaken, so I doubt Grishina would compete.

    Nice to see Dementieva getting in form.

    For a newly minted senior hitched to a wagon of soaring expectations, Grishina's performance at London Prepares seemed promising, and Mr. Rodionenko's statement eerily prophetic. Who dreamed this starlet would return to Greenwich Arena--to the London Games--completely disheveled?

    When it comes to Grishina, no news is probably good news. If anyone needs privacy and ample time to recover, it is this poor girl.

    ANNA PAVLOVA!!! If she improves some of her beam, floor, and vault, than she could make to next years worlds.

      Anna does not train with the national team and Andrei Rodionenko has said that this is because her knee injury excludes her from the hard training necessary on the national team.
      I understand the enthusiasm that people have for Anna's gymnastics; and she often seems stronger and more consistent on vault than many of those on the current national team - however, I would be surprised to see her qualify for any of those top level competitions.
      Did you see the interview with her in International Gymnast recently where she discusses the situation on the national team?

I did my routine fairly well without serious error. On beam I didn't have the start value but I received the highest execution score.  We will try to fix that before the World Championships. Considering the problems I had with my ankle, I think I performed to the optimum at the moment.  I did everything I could. I'm not  the least bit sorry that I performed here -  Very glad that I could help the team. I think my presence made things easier for the girls.   It is very difficult to compete at such serious senior competitions for the first time.  Of course they were very worried.   But I'm sure that with time they will learn to cope easily with their nerves (smiles).

Remembering last summer - Nelli Kim, her judges and Viktoria Komova

In view of Nelli Kim's recent interview , Lupita and I thought it timely to revisit the performance of some of the WTC President's judges over past competitions ... this article from 27th August 2012 is reposted here, as a reminder. Does Komova need gymnastics?

Komova - a prodigious talent for performance I have been pondering the nature of gymnastics talent recently, while viewing some videos of 1992 competitions on YouTube - you can find links to them if you like, by visiting RRG's Facebook page.
