Flashback to 1972 ... Olga Korbut wins the BBC's International Sportswoman of the Year Award

I remember Olga receiving this award back in 1972 ... I was 13 years old. It was before the time of video recorders, personal computers and Youtube, and therefore a rare opportunity to savour those amazing moments from Munich again.

I was so thrilled to see Olga Korbut on my little black and white TV screen, collecting her BBC award as International Sportswoman of the Year. Gymnastics was new to me, Olga had opened my eyes to the sport, they have never closed.

There was something so special about Olga. Those moments from 1972 never lose their freshness.

With many thanks, once again, to Novosti, for reminding me of this great moment.

    Ludmilla was a much better gymnast. She did not get the attention she deserved.

    no, olga was better. She carried out exercise never before seen, she is the "Mother of gymnastic".

    I would love to transport the Munich Olga to the Rio Games and watch her and Simone competing in the AA together. What a competition that would be! Imagine Olga in today's gymnastics, free of the chains of the oppressive USSR federation and restrictions that tried to suppress her difficulty and being able to really be rewarded for all she was capable of.

    We always hear future champions named as the "Next Olga" and "Next Mary Lou" but I feel like both Shawn Johnson and Simone Biles are almost "Next Olgas" except they were both able to have the success Olga SHOULD have had if not for everything with her coach and federation and injuries. They both have outrageous difficulty in comparison to the rest of the field - and in Simone's case, original trick difficulty like Olga did - and the crowd appeal for their personalities.

    I love that even though most gymnasts are too young to remember her anymore, they still carry on the legacy she started of originality, pushing the envelope while appealing to the crowd's hearts.

    Thank you Olga, for all the gifts you brought to gymnastics.

    yes, I remember too, Olga Korbut gave great joy to alot of people around the world including me.

I did my routine fairly well without serious error. On beam I didn't have the start value but I received the highest execution score.  We will try to fix that before the World Championships. Considering the problems I had with my ankle, I think I performed to the optimum at the moment.  I did everything I could. I'm not  the least bit sorry that I performed here -  Very glad that I could help the team. I think my presence made things easier for the girls.   It is very difficult to compete at such serious senior competitions for the first time.  Of course they were very worried.   But I'm sure that with time they will learn to cope easily with their nerves (smiles).

Who really won the WAG All Around?

You will find a link to the FIG's newly published book of results at the Olympic Games here .  This year, they have broken down the judge's execution scores so you can see exactly how each judge evaluated the gymnasts' performances.  It makes for interesting reading - if only I had more time to analyse each judge's marking.  A skim reading already highlights multiple inconsistencies in individual judges' marks and makes you wonder why they bother with the jury at all. I have taken the time to look at the reference judges' scores for the top four in the women's all around.  The FIG explains here what their role is, and how they are selected.  I even used my calculator, which is a risky thing in my hands.  My, how I wish we could have seen a similar document for the Tokyo World Championships. I wonder if anyone can explain how, if the FIG's Code of Points is so objective and fair, it is possible to come up with two different results using two differ...

The State of the Art - Gymnastics in 2013

Just picked up Peter Aykroyd's 1987 book  International Gymnastics: Sport Art or Science?.  Seeing it reminded me that gymnastics is in a constant state of flux and change; its identity has been subject to debate and conflict since the earliest days of competitive gymnastics, well before it existed in the form we recognise today.  I want to try to talk about the state of the sport today, how it compares to past models, how it arrived at this point, and what are the questions arising. I make no apologies for publishing the picture comparisons on this page, which were created by Lifje.  Some have seemed to find them rather challenging in the past, but they are not airbrushed or altered in any way.  Yes, the pictures are purpose selected for the sake of comparison, but they express a truth about the direction the sport has taken over the past few years.  They are not so much about Russia versus America as artistry versus athletics.  I do not pretend...
