Komova, Dementieva out; no all around for Mustafina - latest from Russian Nationals

Aliya Mustafina, World All Around Champion, 2010
Valentina Rodionenko today announced that 2011 European Champion and defending Russian national champion Anna Dementieva will miss this week's Russian National Championships with tonsilitis.  Anna is not alone in missing the Championships as (confirmed yesterday by Andrei Rodionenko) 2011 World Vice-Champion Viktoria Komova is also out with a leg injury which will need a couple more weeks' therapy.

2010 World Champion Aliya Mustafina, recovering from a serious injury incurred at last year's European Championships, will participate in the championships, although Rodionenko said she will not compete all around.

The Russian Championships, coming early in the season, have traditionally seen an incomplete field as gymnasts prepare at different paces.  With Russia's three leading all around gymnasts - Dementieva, Mustafina and Komova - out of the picture, it will be interesting to see who emerges as a leader.  Grishina, Afanasyeva, Belokobylskaya?  Whoever it is will be a surprise - and will no doubt contribute greatly to the profile of this year's deep and talented Russian team.

  3. again, thank you so, so much for the information! I am praying for Anna's quick recovery and that nothing more serious happens to Vika's ankle. Not to mention how I'm sure we all hope for Aliya's steady and safe comeback. It's interesting who's going to take the all-around.. but at this point my hat goes off to the Russian coaches, who are obviously cautious and caring first and foremost for the girls to stay healthy. after all, it's still early in the season and this year is all about London.

Melnikova plans to increase her D scores before Jakarta

Translation of highlights of article from Sport Express. Angelina Melnikova spoke to Sport-Express journalist Sergey Lisin about today's competition day.  ❓Did you expect such a victorious end to the day, considering how it started on balance beam? 💬 No. Just looking at the scoreboard just now gave me goosebumps; it's a great joy. This is my first time competing for Vladimir, and I'm so happy that we won this Russian Championships, competing for the Vladimir team, and we achieved such a historic victory. It was fantastic, thanks to the whole team. ❓And still, about balance beam. 💬 I don't want to talk about that shame. I have nothing to say, I'm just ashamed; I can't find any other words. ❓How did you manage to pull myself together after that? 💬 Actually, I'm in pretty good shape, and I was generally confident on all the apparatuses today. As a professional athlete, if something isn't working out, I can't give up on the next apparatus. ❓ Yesterda...

Svetlana Boginskaya: I was always a bitch* in gymnastics

Svetlana Boginskaya, 15 years old, with her medals from the Seoul Olympics Nico translates the latest interview with gymnastics legend Svetlana Boginskaya, during a recent visit to her home country of Belarus. Svetlana Boginskaya: I was always a bitch* in gymnastics, so now I ask for forgiveness from everyone who came in contact with me. The National Olympic Committee of Belarus held a press conference with three-time Olympic Champion in artistic gymnastics, Svetlana Boginskaya. The meeting was devoted to the 25th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Seoul. In South Korea the Belarussian won two gold medals in the team competition and vault. As a gift to the Olympic Hall of fame, the famous gymnast, now living in the United States, donated one of her trophies that she won at the 1990 European Championships and a pennant for Best Female Athlete of the USSR in 1989. David Belyavski builds his legend

I remember sitting in the Olympiski stadium in Moscow in 2013, absolutely mesmerised by David Belyavski as he progressed inexorably to the gold AA.   His last piece was pommel horse.  He stood there, his arms loosely at his sides, head down, completely in the zone.  The arena sound system was playing music in the background; I remember Led Zeppelin.  The music was curiously cohesive with the space and the occasion.  When it was time for him to go, he was perfect, golden.   Belyavski spans generations of gymnast, floats across era of gymnastics. His body is light and lithe.  His technique is balletic.  You could watch Belyavski perform a simple handstand or leap, and it would still be impressive.  His execution is immaculate. It’s now 2025, and David is 15 years into his senior career.  Today he won a silver medal on the pommel horse.  Tomorrow, he will compete in the parallel bars final.  He is 33. And on his social medi...
