Dmitri Andreev speaks of gymnasts’ performance in Moscow

Head coach of the Russian national team Dmitry Andreev shared his impressions of the "Strongest Athletes Cup":

"If we talk about the main team, I would like to note the performance of Daniil Novikov. It is nice that he got into good shape and showed himself well at the competition. He has something to improve on; I know that he and his coach are working on making the program more difficult.

We can single out Sasha Kartsev, who has finally recovered from his injuries. We were counting on Mukhammadzhon Yakubov: he was the favorite, but, unfortunately, he did not perform so well. Perhaps he does not have enough experience of performing as a leader yet - maybe his nerves gave in. His program is good; we know that he is capable of performing it at a high level.

Lyudmila Roshchina showed herself well, but Anya Kalmykova's situation turned out the same as Mukhammadzhon's - either nerves or the burden of responsibility affected her. The all-around did not go well, and individual events did not work out.

In the youth team, Arseniy Dukhno coped with the role of leader and performed the program with dignity. Daniil Smirnov failed in many ways; this can be explained by the fact that he came back from the Spartakiad and looked tired. This fatigue was primarily psychological.

Diana Gainulina pleased: she pulled herself together and looked good. Varya Belova completed the program quite smoothly, but it was still obvious that she felt tired after the Spartakiad. This once again shows that now we need to gain competitive experience against other competitors, and at these competitions there was someone to compete with.

The Organizing Committee and the Federation worked very well, the television picture was at a high level. We need competitions of this format, so that competitors from other countries come. We need to develop these competitions, we will work on this. We are already discussing what the format of the Strongest Athletes Cup could be next year."

Translation of highlights of article from Sport Express. Angelina Melnikova spoke to Sport-Express journalist Sergey Lisin about today's competition day.  ❓Did you expect such a victorious end to the day, considering how it started on balance beam? đź’¬ No. Just looking at the scoreboard just now gave me goosebumps; it's a great joy. This is my first time competing for Vladimir, and I'm so happy that we won this Russian Championships, competing for the Vladimir team, and we achieved such a historic victory. It was fantastic, thanks to the whole team. ❓And still, about balance beam. đź’¬ I don't want to talk about that shame. I have nothing to say, I'm just ashamed; I can't find any other words. ❓How did you manage to pull myself together after that? đź’¬ Actually, I'm in pretty good shape, and I was generally confident on all the apparatuses today. As a professional athlete, if something isn't working out, I can't give up on the next apparatus. ❓ Yesterda...

David Belyavski builds his legend

I remember sitting in the Olympiski stadium in Moscow in 2013, absolutely mesmerised by David Belyavski as he progressed inexorably to the gold AA.   His last piece was pommel horse.  He stood there, his arms loosely at his sides, head down, completely in the zone.  The arena sound system was playing music in the background; I remember Led Zeppelin.  The music was curiously cohesive with the space and the occasion.  When it was time for him to go, he was perfect, golden.   Belyavski spans generations of gymnast, floats across era of gymnastics. His body is light and lithe.  His technique is balletic.  You could watch Belyavski perform a simple handstand or leap, and it would still be impressive.  His execution is immaculate. It’s now 2025, and David is 15 years into his senior career.  Today he won a silver medal on the pommel horse.  Tomorrow, he will compete in the parallel bars final.  He is 33. And on his social medi...
