Komova to begin recovery and training this year

Doctors have given 2012 Olympian Viktoria Komova the all clear to begin light training and make a gradual recovery this year, reports her father, Alexander Komov.

Viktoria missed last year's Olympics with severe back pain caused by a stress fracture in her vertebrae.  Komov emphasised that it is still early days, and they don't know if the pain levels will return as the workload increases - only time will tell.  But Viktoria has a clear intention to make her way back into training.

Good luck to Vika!  Let's hope to see her competing in good health once more.

  1. Wouldn't it be wiser to let her rest longer since it's still early in the quad?

    1. TBH I think that that is what her father is saying they will do - recover this year and if possible comeback next. He says 'gradual recovery this year'.
Komova has had a lot of time off which can be just as bad in terms of body composition as over competing and training. To avoid injury, it is better to train in a straight line rather than in a dotted line. I think we can see the result of inconsistent training in the injury rate of the Russian team. They lack discipline and it leaves them vulnerable.

    2. I agree- I think if she started with conditioning this year and then started training next year then she has a better view of Tokyo because I can't see her lasting a whole quad. If she started training again, Rodionenkos might start to use her to compete and she might get injured again! Consistency is the key, as is being slow and steady. I'd love to see her come back and compete on an international level.

  2. I would love to see Komova back! I hope she does, but I agree with everyone here that it is best if she conditions this year and slowly competes. I hope the Russians learned how Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas didn't compete during the whole quad and instead rested from competition for 2 years.

  3. Hi.I hope Komova comes back but ,on a personal note, Russian nationals are starting soon, and I couldn't find the live streaming. Maybe, as the competition has moved to Kazan, there is no internet streaming. some help?

  4. Mas a komova esta descansando desde 2012, ela ainda tem que mostrar se ainda rende algo na ginastica, antes que a biles volta.

  9. I try not to get my hopes too high about gymnasts returning, but I would love to see a healthy Komova and Biles compete together. Two of my favorite modern gymnasts, although they are very different!

  11. I really do hope so. Viktoria Komova is truly the best gymnast in the world without a Gold olympic medal. I enjoy seeing her elegance and grace and natural beauty and unexpected power. Missing her Komova II, her in-bar stalders, her Amanar (and even pretty DTY), her arabian, Fabrichnova dismount...Everything. Gymnastics needs her to light the way so we don't trend toward power power power.

  12. Hello Anonymous- It seems you are very outdated. Komova already had a full recovery. She is now healthy and strong. Her last international competitions- Stuttgart Challenge and Voronin Cup- showed that she is not as good as she were in the past. Nonetheless, Komova is coming back little by little. Baby steps. You will see her compete soon in Russians and Europeans. Get ready for a lot of her, maybe a back to back battle against Simon Biles. Have a nice day.

Svetlana Boginskaya: I was always a bitch* in gymnastics

Svetlana Boginskaya, 15 years old, with her medals from the Seoul Olympics Nico translates the latest interview with gymnastics legend Svetlana Boginskaya, during a recent visit to her home country of Belarus. Svetlana Boginskaya: I was always a bitch* in gymnastics, so now I ask for forgiveness from everyone who came in contact with me. The National Olympic Committee of Belarus held a press conference with three-time Olympic Champion in artistic gymnastics, Svetlana Boginskaya. The meeting was devoted to the 25th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Seoul. In South Korea the Belarussian won two gold medals in the team competition and vault. How happy we were when we could share with such stars as Boginskaya, Scherbo, and Ivankov,...

Mustafina Interview 2 of 2 : 'I will only perform under the Russian flag'

Argumentyi i Fakti interview with Aliya Mustafina Translated by Marina Vulis ‘I have no fear’, says Aliya Mustafina.   ‘My father [Farhat Mustafin, the bronze medallist in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1976 Olympics] took me to my first gymnastics class.   In his opinion children need to do sports, and he saw gymnastics as useful for my general development.   He had no goals – just to let us practice.’ It did not end with ‘just practice’ – she became the World Champion at 16, but then had an ACL injury the next year (2011) at the Europeans.   Even just returning to gymnastics is a feat; then she came back to win four medals at the 2012 Olympics. Aliya Mustafina – That injury.   I do not know why I was ashamed – so many people were watching me and I could not even walk.   My parents!   They saw everything on TV (the coach had to carry her from the podium).   Of course I was aware that anything could happen in gymnastics, but I di...

Marinov planning a partial comeback at the Russian champs

ðŸŽ¤ "Plans for August: work, work, and work some more!" — Daniil Marinov on the training camp in Sirius, summer, and preparation for the Russian Championship ❓ How productive was your time at the training camp in Sirius? "Personally, I viewed this training camp not only as a recovery camp, but also as a preparatory one. My teammates had just recently returned from competitions, and yes, they needed a rest. But I, on the contrary, needed to start working hard, because there wasn't much time left before the Russian Championship. At the training camp in Sirius, I was able to work hard, and at the same time swim in the sea, change the scenery. I'm glad I went with the whole team!" ❓ Did you manage to regain your physical fitness after shoulder surgery? "More or less, yes. I remembered many elements from my routine. But I still continue to treat and pump up my shoulder, in parallel with getting into shape." ❓ Are you already working on all the apparatus...
