Start list for WAG qualifications

2010 World Champion Aliya Mustafina will play a vital role



The FIG has now published a start list for tomorrow's WAG qualification (interestingly, it shows Romania's Iordache doing the all around, so perhaps her heel isn't that bad after all ...)

Remember in qualis, the format is 5-4-3 so there is a little less pressure than in the finals, where every routine counts. 

The working order for the Russian girls is as follows :

Floor : Mustafina, Komova, Grishina, Afanasyeva
Vault : Grishina, Komova, Mustafina, Paseka
Bars : Grishina, Mustafina, Komova Paseka
Beam : Mustafina, Grishina, Komova, Afanasyeva









Mustafina appears as a 'table setter' on floor and beam where she is expected to do a solid job. Captain Afanasyeva has to carry the pressure both on floor and beam as the final gymnast there.  I'm guessing it will be a close battle between Mustafina and Grishina for the second all around spot, assuming that Komova does her job.  Although I would love to see Mustafina lead this team if not the entire competitive field, and believe that her spirit makes that entirely possible.  If the gymnasts all perform to potential, this is a very powerful team.

Does Russia need Mustafina in Glasgow? Vaitsekhovskaya adds her voice

'Should Mustafina compete in Glasgow, considering her fragile state of health? - aren't the Olympics more important?' are the key themes of this brief news piece by Elena Vaitsekhovskaya, a top sports journalist who has interviewed Alexandrov, Arkayev, Starkin, Mustafina and Rodionenko in the last five years since Aliya won the World Championships. Elena stresses that this year nothing unusual has happened.  Aliya has worked hard with her new coach Sergei Starkin.  She did a 'great job', demonstrating her work at the European Games in Baku where she won the all around, bars and team events as well as silver in the floor exercise. No Paseka for Russia in Berne

Barely two weeks will elapse before the WAG European Championships begin in Berne, Switzerland, and the news we had been fearing has been confirmed : world vault gold medallist Maria Paseka is  off the Russian team while she nurses a back injury.  This leaves Russia significantly weakened for the coming competition, with co-star Viktoria Komova also missing from the line-up.  It is a little disappointing, but it seems the right decision to rest the gymnasts so that they can be at their best when and where it really matters. Who will replace Paseka?  Valentina Rodionenko says that the youngster Natalia Kapitonova, who trains in Penza, has been chosen on the basis of her solid performances at national championships.  Well, we will have to wait and see - these announcements often turn out to be unreliable.   I personally would prefer to see the dynamic Seda Tutkhalyan be given a chance at this level, but Kapitonova has certainly shown herself to be more reliab...
