BBC transmission schedule - Artistic Gymnastics

Thanks to the BBC, we have free wall to wall coverage of the artistic gymnastics at this year's Olympics. Only the podium training remains as a last, unfortunate, omission from mainstream TV.

If you have Freeview/Freesat, take a look at your TV guide and you will see 24 extra channels where the various Olympic sports will have their homes. This week's Radio Times has a comprehensive guide to all the channels from which I'll extract the information as to where you can watch the gymnastics. The teams competing in the qualifying sessions are listed according to the order in which they will compete on the apparatus. For the men, this means Floor, Pommel Horse, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar. So, for example, in the first qualifying session Britain will be beginning their efforts on Rings, progressing next to vault etc etc. For the women, the rotations begin on vault, then uneven bars, then beam, then floor.

    I'm afraid I'm not sure Katie - I would check your Sky guide if you can. I've offered the BBC coverage up as it seems to be comprehensive - and accessible for free to all TV licence payers in the UK.

Does Russia need Mustafina in Glasgow? Vaitsekhovskaya adds her voice

'Should Mustafina compete in Glasgow, considering her fragile state of health? - aren't the Olympics more important?' are the key themes of this brief news piece by Elena Vaitsekhovskaya, a top sports journalist who has interviewed Alexandrov, Arkayev, Starkin, Mustafina and Rodionenko in the last five years since Aliya won the World Championships. Elena stresses that this year nothing unusual has happened.  Aliya has worked hard with her new coach Sergei Starkin.  She did a 'great job', demonstrating her work at the European Games in Baku where she won the all around, bars and team events as well as silver in the floor exercise. But, says Vaitsekhovskaya, more important than the medals was the fact that Aliya showed a new technical level, began work on upgrades for the Rio Olympics.  Just competing in one event - the Baku games - could be enough for a veteran athlete of Mustafina's experience.  The body ages in both time - and injuries.  Athletes always respond...

No Paseka for Russia in Berne

Barely two weeks will elapse before the WAG European Championships begin in Berne, Switzerland, and the news we had been fearing has been confirmed : world vault gold medallist Maria Paseka is  off the Russian team while she nurses a back injury.  This leaves Russia significantly weakened for the coming competition, with co-star Viktoria Komova also missing from the line-up.  It is a little disappointing, but it seems the right decision to rest the gymnasts so that they can be at their best when and where it really matters. Who will replace Paseka?  Valentina Rodionenko says that the youngster Natalia Kapitonova, who trains in Penza, has been chosen on the basis of her solid performances at national championships.  Well, we will have to wait and see - these announcements often turn out to be unreliable.   I personally would prefer to see the dynamic Seda Tutkhalyan be given a chance at this level, but Kapitonova has certainly shown herself to be more reliab...
