Evgeniya Shelgunova - a new star?

This young gymnast, born 8th August 1997, comes from the town of Alatir in the Chuvash Republic (capital: Cheboksary) and is coached by Ludmilla Marinova and Nadezhda Tikhonova.  She turns 15 in the Olympic year, and is a member of the Russian junior national squad (see this link for a full list and details) so all being well will be eligible to compete at world senior level from 2013.

Shelgunova has been doing rather well recently, taking five golds at the recent Spartakiade competitions, and will be appearing at the Youth Olympics. The Russian Gymnastics Federation has provided a link to a 22nd July article from the Moscow special edition of Sovietski Sport with an interview with this young gymnast.  Even if you don't speak Russian, it's worth a look for the beautiful photograph!  There is also now an English language translation here.

Evgeniya says her favourite gymnast is Aliya Mustafina, and she would like to win the world championships one day.  Her workouts are hard, but she has the weekend to recover and in her spare time enjoys walks in the woods, visits to the museum with her coaches, and trips to the Water-park.  She hopes to be able to see the latest Harry Potter film after her return from Turkey.  She is looking forward to her Spanish holiday in August with the rest of the junior team.  Vault and floor are her favourite apparatus.

    Thanks Christina ... I'll make the correction (again, I started with Shegulnova) ... honestly I think I'm going mad what with incomplete EYOF results etc etc.

Nelli Kim - 'Russian gymnastics has closed in on itself' - Lupita translates

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Ed's note : much of the initial response to this interview - both here and in the wider gymternet -  has focussed on the detail of Kim's words and especially her comments about Viktoria Komova, and smiling.  But I think these have to be taken in context, and not too literally. Don't forget that just a day ago Andrei Rodionenko complained bitterly about the judging in Antwerp, calling Kim's behaviour 'aggressive'. Aliya Mustafina - 'each medal is very special'

'I'm very happy that everything turned out well today  ... Each medal is very special.  The UK team made mistakes, so there was a wide margin [of victory]... But naturally, [what I did] is not enough for the Olympics.  I prepared well for beam and bars but I am not ready for floor, I stepped up to help the team. ...
