Russian Gymnastics Revenue streams

This, my second graphic, needs quite a bit of tweaking that I don’t have time to do at present. For example, the sport as a whole should sit centre top. There needs to be a depiction of grass roots of the sport, including the privately run, participatory sector, as well as the local, regional and national teams as seniors and juniors.

I have a question : do CSKA, Dynamo etc even exist under these names today? The gyms have been refurbished and, in line with the World Gymnastics rules for the past years, show no evidence of government or army support. This is a touch of airbrushing, I think, as Russia couldn’t simply close those enormous organisations down, and still have a functioning gymnastics machine … could they?

The Premiere League, Titans, social media income and other TV shows generate income for the gymnasts and must provide a return on state ànd or corporate investment , in some way.

The streaming platforms for gymnastics are run directly by the regions; Match TV is by far the most important national interest.

I doubt that fan engagement brings much money to the sport in Russia; ordinary people don’t have money to burn on tickets and merchandise. Social media such as Facebook ànd Instagram can only pay into Western accounts as far as I am aware.

So, as I said earlier, lots of changes required here; but even a rough diagram helps to sharpen up the thinking, and hopefully eventually we’ll get these points hammered out.

    Yes, dynamo and cska very much still exist! They are still state funded, there is no requirement for them not to be and never has been. The coaches there are still employed by the state. Although not at dynamomoscow. It keeps the name but has been private enterprise for decades now.

The Russian MAG and WAG teams take their preparation for World Championships in Nanning one step further this week, as key players compete in the annual Russia Cup in Penza.  There will be team, all around and event finals. Nelli Kim - 'Russian gymnastics has closed in on itself' - Lupita translates

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Ed's note : much of the initial response to this interview - both here and in the wider gymternet -  has focussed on the detail of Kim's words and especially her comments about Viktoria Komova, and smiling.  But I think these have to be taken in context, and not too literally. Don't forget that just a day ago Andrei Rodionenko complained bitterly about the judging in Antwerp, calling Kim's behaviour 'aggressive'. In view of Nelli Kim's recent interview , Lupita and I thought it timely to revisit the performance of some of the WTC President's judges over past competitions ... this article from 27th August 2012 is reposted here, as a reminder. You will find a link to the FIG's newly published book of results at the Olympic Games here .  This year, they have broken down the judge's execution scores so you can see exactly how each judge evaluated the gymnasts' performances.  It makes for interesting reading - if only I had more time to analyse each judge's marking.  A skim reading already highlights multiple inconsistencies in individual judges' marks and makes you wonder why they bother with the jury at all.
