Daria Spiridonova - I will need to increase my D value and go clean to win in Rio

- To be honest, I have almost forgotten the special feeling that I won the World Championship gold - said Daria Spiridonova. - I am happy, but in general everything is back as it was - and still is.  Only at home, of course, I was greeted and welcomed as a hero (smiles).

- When you flew out to Glasgow, did you expect to return with a gold medal?

- No. And in particular I did not expect that there would be four winners on one apparatus (smiles). This is something incredible, it has happened for the first time in the history of gymnastics.

- What did you talk about with Viktoria Komova when you stood together on the highest step of the podium?

- "How does that even happen?" Surprise and delight at the same time.

- In fact, all four athletes were at the same level?

- In our sport, a lot depends on the judges.  The D scores were all different.  The highest was a Chinese woman, then there was an American, and Vika Komova was a little lower, one-tenth. Probably they were all equal in the purity of execution. I had the feeling that I could have done better than all the others. Well, I have known things to go better; I had a mistake. In general, this year for me has turned out to be very successful on the bars - I was able to finish first at the European Championships and the World Championships.

- How do you feel about fourth place in the team?

- We could do better, but the girls were slightly nervous on the beam - and fell.  We are a little less worried about individual finals - the team is most important.

- What is the mood in the team after the World Championships?

- The journey home was quite fun, our mood was good. However, we were all very tired, and there was a three-hour flight delay and [then we had to wait for a later connection].  As a result, we ended up spending eleven extra hours at airports.

- What are your future plans?

- We still have a few days to stay at home. On November 9th we will go to Israel to work out and relax a bit. The entire World Championships team will go.  It is necessary to keep in shape.   I do not know whether we will have soon a complete vacation.  Apparently, there will be time for a rest after the Olympics (smiles).

- What are your plans for the Rio 2016?

- I do not know whether I will compete anywhere except bars - this is still not known. But to win at the Olympics, it will be necessary to increase my D score and compete cleaner. Therefore, after relaxing somewhat in Israel I will put together a new routine. Maybe add a [?Sin-Bers?] and a new dismount. The warm up for Rio 2016 will be, probably, the European Championships.

Does anyone know what the Sin Bers(!) could be?

  2. It was indeed an awesome year for Spiridonova UB Eu & worlds champion, good luck for your incoming endeavors... but the next year is another story in the presence of good AAers like Melnikova, Skrypnic and who have a complicated Bars routine of their own.

  3. On a five member team I dont see Spiridonova making the team for bars alone however, if Mustafina is unable to return her place is perhaps more secure.

    1. I personally see these people in a five member team: Komova, Afanasyeva, Mustafina, Paseka, and Melnikova. There could be pretty much anyone of them on vault and bars(probably not Melnikova on vault and not Ksenia on Bars) , Komova, Mustafina, and Melnikova on beam, Afanasyeva if their desperate, and then anyone on floor.

    2. This is my prediction too for the team.

    3. Queen Elizabeth and everyone else,

What do you think of Ekaterina Sokova?

I think she is another potential member. Her beam is amazing; she has a strong, consistent floor (better than Melnikova, Spiri, Paseka, Masha, and Seda). On bars she has really strong skills; she just needs to connect her skills.

No Paseka for Russia in Berne

Barely two weeks will elapse before the WAG European Championships begin in Berne, Switzerland, and the news we had been fearing has been confirmed : world vault gold medallist Maria Paseka is  off the Russian team while she nurses a back injury.  This leaves Russia significantly weakened for the coming competition, with co-star Viktoria Komova also missing from the line-up.  It is a little disappointing, but it seems the right decision to rest the gymnasts so that they can be at their best when and where it really matters. Who will replace Paseka?  Valentina Rodionenko says that the youngster Natalia Kapitonova, who trains in Penza, has been chosen on the basis of her solid performances at national championships.  Well, we will have to wait and see - these announcements often turn out to be unreliable.   I personally would prefer to see the dynamic Seda Tutkhalyan be given a chance at this level, but Kapitonova has certainly shown herself to be more reliab...

The State of the Art - Gymnastics in 2013

Just picked up Peter Aykroyd's 1987 book  International Gymnastics: Sport Art or Science?.  Seeing it reminded me that gymnastics is in a constant state of flux and change; its identity has been subject to debate and conflict since the earliest days of competitive gymnastics, well before it existed in the form we recognise today.  I want to try to talk about the state of the sport today, how it compares to past models, how it arrived at this point, and what are the questions arising. I make no apologies for publishing the picture comparisons on this page, which were created by Lifje.  Some have seemed to find them rather challenging in the past, but they are not airbrushed or altered in any way.  Yes, the pictures are purpose selected for the sake of comparison, but they express a truth about the direction the sport has taken over the past few years.  They are not so much about Russia versus America as artistry versus athletics.  I do not pretend...

WAG Senior start lists are out - Afan does one, Mustafina three

Start lists are now available for tomorrow's senior team and event quals.  At present, the Russian roster  looks like this - Beam - Melnikova, Tutkhalyan, Mustafina Floor - Melnikova, Tutkhalyan, Mustafina  Vault - Melnikova, Tutkhalyan, Afanasyeva  Bars - Melnikova, Spiridonova, Mustafina  Things can still change, dear reader, but this is the most reliable official news we have.    It will be good to see all five members of the team compete - I am relieved that Mustafina isn't doing all four but worried for her legs on floor; delighted to see Melnikova and Tutkhalyan making such a strong contribution; and pleased that Afanasyeva is having a chance to try out her training, despite what might be a small injury.  Spiridonova is also looking good for bars, in fact to me she is underused here.   Good luck!  Udachi!  To all the team.  We are very excited to see you compete and do well! The start lists can be found here - http:/...
