Melnikova takes Russian Junior Championships

Angelina Melnikova confirmed her status at the top of the junior Russian tree today with an outstanding performance in the junior championships (Master of Sports category), scoring a total of 58.3.  She was followed by Seda Tutkhalyan and Daria Mikhailova, both Muscovites. Mikhailova trains with Anastasia Grishina under Viktor Razumovsky.

In the Candidate Master of Sports category, Elena Eremina came first (55.1), ahead of Gymnix 'veteran' Ekaterina Sokova and the relatively unknown Viktoria Trykina.  Eremina is a team mate of Tatiana Nabiyeva in St Petersburg, and is coached by Alexander Kiryashev. 
All of the medallists in today's competition, with the exception of Trykina, who comes from Moscow, are listed as national team members on the RGF website - I publish some of their details below.  Full results of the competition are available, in Russian.

    Did Maria Bondareva and Anastasia Dmitrieva compete at this Championships?

      Dimitrieva came 5th after a few problems on bars and beam (53.1 - follow the link to the results to see apparatus results).
      Bondareva competed in the team competition earlier this week, but not in the all around :-( She hasn't really recovered her form of previous years.
      Youth Olympics are later this year and based on age group restrictions, we think Seda Tutkhalyan is most likely to represent Russia - Melnikova is too young.

      Evgenia Zhukova who is on the senior reserve team said that Bondareva felt ill :( I hope she will compete on Sunday. But it does seem that Tutkhalyan will be a more likely YOG participant.

Tribute to Russian gymnast and gold medallist Angelina Melnikova

Angelina Melnikova, now 23, is 2021 World AA champion in artistic gymnastics.    She holds a gold medal with her team from the 2020 (2021) Olympics, her second Games.    Visit her home, and no doubt there would be a secure cabinet full of all the various honours, awards and medals she has earned through her career. Angelina Romanovna Melnikova has her primary home in Voronezh, the place of her birth.    The club where she trains is the same one where champions Viktoria Komova, Vera Kolesnikova and Liubov Burda made their names.    1980 Olympic Champion Elena Davydova began her gymnastics life there, too. Aliya Mustafina - I competed as best I could

I did my routine fairly well without serious error. On beam I didn't have the start value but I received the highest execution score.  We will try to fix that before the World Championships. Considering the problems I had with my ankle, I think I performed to the optimum at the moment.  I did everything I could. I'm not  the least bit sorry that I performed here -  Very glad that I could help the team. I think my presence made things easier for the girls.   It is very difficult to compete at such serious senior competitions for the first time.  Of course they were very worried.   But I'm sure that with time they will learn to cope easily with their nerves (smiles).
