Moscow regional championships - WAG national team compete

The national team had an outing yesterday to Moscow's famous Dynamo Club. This was more of a training competition than anything, but it is nice to see the girls and be able to chew over how they are doing. Lauren has done a good report on the competition at the Couch Gymnast and there are links to videos on Triplefull's Youtube Channel.

Brigid from the Couch Gymnast also has a picture of the results on her Facebook page, which I will transcribe here.

* K Goryunova is ineligible for the Olympics under RGF regulations because of an earlier doping offence.

The Russian Gymnastics Federation also has a great photograph gallery, including pictures of the team in competition as well as a ceremony involving Elena Zamolodchikova's coach Nadezhda Masslenikova.

With thanks to to RGF for permission to post some of my favourite pictures here :

  1. I'm wondering what your predictions for the Russian Olympic squad are shaping up to look like! I know it's early days, but it's still fun to speculate :)

  2. I do tend to avoid predictions as my previous attempts have been wildly inaccurate :-) But if you scroll down the blog you will find a post on senior WAG prospects.
Who would you like to see on the team?

    1. I'm worried about Demy's chances, she is just so inconsistent though she is a beautiful gymnast. I really want to see Afanasyeva on the squad and I'm intrigued by Yulia B's prospects as well! There's a good mix of seniors, the trick will be getting the right combination of talents together.

    2. I like Afanasyeva too and think of Belokobylskaya as a dark horse!
I can never though remember a time when selections seemed so likely to be disrupted by injury risk. I really only hope all the girls remain healthy do that the selection can be made on sporting merit.
The Russians have so much talent now. It seems crazy that the team title is likely to be so dominated by the difficulty of the vaulting. On that basis despite their clear strengths on bars, beam and floor they will struggle to beat the USA, whatever the selection.

  3. Good to see Nabieva back on beam. Looks like she's making her bid for a place on the team as an all-rounder.

We are satisfied - Aliya Mustafina

Photo credit: RGF An Allsport interview today with Aliya Mustafina : http://www.allsportinfo.ru/index.php?id=83075 'I think that we are to be congratulated on this bronze medal, we are more satisfied than frustrated', said Aliya Mustafina. 'We were a new team, all the girls are young, and it's their first time in such a serious competition.  I think today we performed to the best of our ability.  Yes, we have had two falls today - on the uneven bars and balance beam.' 'The young girls failed  psychologically, but  the first time you compete on the senior podium - it's not very easy.  No  one is sad.  I  am very pleased with such a performance.  Everything  was fair enough, maybe not everywhere and in all things, but overall it was quite as expected, both our rivals, and the judging.' 'I began to experience more pain in the ankle - continued Aliya Mustafina. - To do the dismounts I had to muster all my strength and clench my teeth.  The coaches have d

Fact or fiction? The press, gymnastics and pregnancy doping

It was a Sunday morning.  I was drinking my coffee and contemplating the day ahead - a workout at the gym, shopping for groceries, an evening reading a book, or catching up on last night's episodes of crime thriller The Bridge .  How nice it was not to have to think about work for a day. Then I saw it - a story about the history of doping in The Observer .  Interesting reading. Of course, cheating is as old as the hills.  It is, unfortunately, human nature for some people to try to gain easy advantage in any kind of competition.  That is why we have laws, rules, ethical guidelines.  People who cheat should face justice and shouldn't complain when they are found out. But the story about pregnancy doping bothered me.  Hadn't that been found to be fictional?  The author began with Olga Kovalenko's allegations made in 1994 - but the rumours had started way back in 1991 with the documentary series More Than A Game .  The practice of pregnancy doping was dis
