Part 2 – Women’s Uneven Bars: Difficulty Makes the Difference

Uneven bars produced some of the highest technical standards of the 2026 Russian Championships. The event featured the championship’s highest D scores in the women’s competition and rewarded gymnasts capable of combining complex release sequences and transitions with clean execution. Although several routines were closely matched for execution, difficulty ultimately proved decisive in separating the medal winners.

Numbers That Matter

14.633 — Highest women’s bars score of the championships.

6.5 — Highest start value achieved.

8.233 — Highest execution score recorded during the championships.

0.367 — Margin between first and third place.

Three gymnasts scored above 14.2, underlining the depth of quality at the top of the field.

Performance Spotlight

Lyudmila Arkadyevna Roshchina

Roshchina’s winning routine combined the championship’s highest difficulty with execution that remained among the very best in the field. Unlike some high-difficulty routines that relied on Difficulty alone, her performance was balanced across both components, leaving little opportunity for rivals to recover through cleaner execution. It was one of the clearest examples at these championships of a gymnast successfully pairing ambitious composition with secure performance.

What We Learned

Uneven bars emerged as the apparatus on which difficulty most clearly separated the leading competitors. While execution scores among the medal contenders differed only modestly, the higher start values of the leading routines created decisive scoring advantages. The event also demonstrated the depth of Russian women’s bars work, with strong performances coming from several regions rather than a single dominant programme.

Nelli Kim - 'Russian gymnastics has closed in on itself' - Lupita translates

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Ed's note : much of the initial response to this interview - both here and in the wider gymternet -  has focussed on the detail of Kim's words and especially her comments about Viktoria Komova, and smiling.  But I think these have to be taken in context, and not too literally. Don't forget that just a day ago Andrei Rodionenko complained bitterly about the judging in Antwerp, calling Kim's behaviour 'aggressive'. Kim is responding to this here, and to the wider current context of Russian gymnastics.  What she is essentially saying to the Russian coach is 'get your own house in order, produce confident, disciplined, well trained gymnasts - stop complaining, do your job, and I will do mine.'   She goes about saying this in a somewhat long winded way and says some things along the way that seem contradictory, unfair, inappropriate even for th...

Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...

Aliya Mustafina - 'each medal is very special'

'I'm very happy that everything turned out well today  ... Each medal is very special.  The UK team made mistakes, so there was a wide margin [of victory]... But naturally, [what I did] is not enough for the Olympics.  I prepared well for beam and bars but I am not ready for floor, I stepped up to help the team. ... To be honest, I did not look at the scores [when asked how the team reacted to the 6.5 gap before the final apparatus].  Gelya (Melnikova) is a good girl, she did everything and did not falter ... Seda fell on quite a complex element.  There is more work to do, but everything else went well.' [About a protest taken by the coaches on her beam score]. 'I am used to my protests being rejected, everything is normal!' Via vk.com I n other news , the UEG has confirmed that Spiridonova will replace Melnikova in tomorrow's bars final. No reason is given, but it is generally considered that Dasha has a better chance of gold.  This decision also means tha...
