Senior Russian judge explains the scoring of Dukhno’s high bar

Chairman of the All-Russian Board of Judges William Katyn explains the judging of Arseny Dukhno’s High Bar routine in the Russia Cup AA, April 2026

‘After Arseniy Dukhno's performance on the high bar, the appeals jury and I assessed a neutral deduction of 0.3 points from the D panel. The judging system doesn't allow for a score to be immediately blocked, so the situation was immediately addressed.

The apparatus judges stated that, in their opinion, Arseniy warmed up on the apparatus for 52 seconds, while the permitted 50 seconds were allowed. The appeals jury, consisting of the head coach, senior coach, senior judge, and myself, decided to review the wording of the rules regarding this deduction. Neutral deductions cannot be protested; it is the job of the appeals jury to monitor the progress of the competition.

The wording states: "If the gymnast is mentally and physically prepared for the vault or is still on the apparatus at this time, they may complete the element or sequence." That is, a delay of 1-2 seconds is permissible as long as the athlete doesn't delay the competition and doesn't interfere with anyone else's preparation for the apparatus.

Arseniy performs a turn and dismounts at the 50-second mark, resulting in a total warm-up time of 52 seconds. There are no objective factors to justify this neutral deduction. He was on the apparatus during the element and didn't begin performing any other elements—he simply dismounted and left the platform.

After reviewing the situation, the 0.3-point deduction was rescinded. The appeals jury needed time to adjust the results in the system according to the rules.’

The State of Gymnastics - 'Soviet' or 'American' style?

Lioudmilla Tourischeva, 1972 Olympic All Around champion in artistic gymnastics, was held up as an example of the ideal Soviet citizen.  Here she coaches one of the Soviet Union's leading gymnasts from the 1980 Olympics, Natalia Shaposhnikova The Soviet Union had a genius for lifting sport beyond the textbook, injecting the aesthetic where previously only goals had been in plain view.   This was not only manifest in gymnastics.  Do you remember the ‘Russian Five’, the players who elevated ice hockey to a creative sporting display, mesmerising their opponents and spectators with intricate patterns of play, so rhythmic and entertaining that they could have been set to music?   In gymnastics, a sport where the aesthetic counted as much as the outcome, it was this ability to create spectacle out of competition that resulted in the most extraordinary athletic performances.  The ‘Golden Era’, most commonly understood to cover the years from 1952-1...
