Voronin Cup cancelled

This year’s annual Voronin Cup, normally a highlight of the Moscow competition calendar, has been cancelled.  The club will instead be working on moving into its new premises in Petrovsky Park.  Funded by VTB Bank and public resources, the cost of the new facility was around 5.6 billion roubles (£48.4m)

the gymnastics tournament for the Voronin Cup in 2023 has been cancelled.

The president of the gymnastics club "Dynamo" noted that in 2023 the hall of the Dynamo Sports Academy will be opened in Petrovsky Park

MOSCOW, October 23. /TASS/. The international artistic gymnastics tournament for the Mikhail Voronin Cup will not be held in 2023; competition organizers are currently focused on preparing for the opening of the gymnasium at the Dynamo Sports Academy at the end of the year. This was reported to TASS by the president of the Dynamo gymnastics club and member of the presidium of the Russian Artistic Gymnastics Federation Andrei Zudin.

“At the end of the year we are opening a gymnasium at the Dynamo Sports Academy in Petrovsky Park, all our attention is now focused on this,” said Zudin. “We are doing everything so that our athletes from the Dynamo-Moscow gymnastics club named after Mikhail Voronin have the opportunity to train fully, and the Academy of Sports could host international competitions for the Mikhail Voronin Olympic Champion Cup. We planned to hold our tournament here this year, but, unfortunately, there was not enough time for reasons beyond our control. The gymnasium will have stands for 400 spectators, in the competition hall - for 1,000 people."

“At the end of November or beginning of December, the gymnastics hall will be opened, a grand celebration awaits the athletes of Russia and friendly countries. We will invite to the opening the leaders of the Dynamo society, VTB Bank, which helped us build this hall and purchase equipment. We will be waiting for guests from the Ministry of Sports Russia and Mosport, the Russian Artistic Gymnastics Federation and the Moscow Federation. We will definitely invite veterans of Dynamo artistic gymnastics,” added the TASS interlocutor.

The grand opening of the Dynamo Sports Academy took place on September 12. Construction of a multifunctional sports and training complex in Petrovsky Park began in June 2021 and was completed in March 2023. The work was financed from extrabudgetary funds. Investments in the project implementation amounted to 5.6 billion rubles.

Tatiana Nabiyeva is looking good in training and the other girls are also working.  Ksenia Afanasyeva won't have time to prepare for Worlds, and Anastasia Grishina's participation is also in doubt, we just don't know if she will qualify for the team.   We have hopes for Aliya Mustafina.  As always, she is our number one.  It would be great if there were t...

Nelli Kim - 'Russian gymnastics has closed in on itself' - Lupita translates

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Ed's note : much of the initial response to this interview - both here and in the wider gymternet -  has focussed on the detail of Kim's words and especially her comments about Viktoria Komova, and smiling.  But I think these have to be taken in context, and not too literally. Don't forget that just a day ago Andrei Rodionenko complained bitterly about the judging in Antwerp, calling Kim's behaviour 'aggressive'. Kim is responding to this here, and to the wider current context of Russian gymnastics.  What she is essentially saying to the Russian coach is 'get your own house in order, produce confident, disciplined, well trained gymnasts - stop complaining, do your job, and I will do mine.'   She goes about saying this in a somewhat long winded way and says some things along the way that seem contradictory, unfair, inappropriate even for th...

Ksenia Afanasyeva takes retirement

Leading Russian gymnast since 2007, Ksenia Afanasyeva has retired from gymnastics for medical reasons, reports Alexei Fililov from R Sport.   Valentina Rodionenko explained that Ksenia has a serious kidney illness. She is in hospital and will take not just days but weeks to recover. Afanasyeva is not just a brilliant gymnast but also a kind, humourous and intelligent team captain.  Her presence will be missed by both spectators and fellow competitors in Rio. Ksenia's place on the Russian team travelling to Rio on Sunday will be taken by the experienced and well prepared Evgenia Shelgunova. RRG would like to wish Ksenia a full recovery.  Get well soon, Ksenia and we will look forward to hearing about your next steps in your new life. http://m.rsport.ru/artist_gym/20160721/993115276.html
