Still no criteria for neutral participation at the Olympics, TASS reports

 Still no change on the status of Russian gymnasts wishing to compete individually at the Paris Olympics.


TASS reports that the FIG have yet to release the conditions for gymnasts’ eligibility to qualify for neutral status.  These criteria have been expected since July.  Valentina Rodionenko says that she believes that the FIG are waiting for any possible  ‘changes in the political situation’ before they release the information.


Russian gymnasts are competing this week in Sochi for the prestigious Russia Cup in All Around and Event Finals.  This is the top individual event in the Russian gymnastics calendar, which would normally qualify gymnasts for the World Championships.  The competition continues today with the Women’s AA.  Top contenders for the title are the veteran Angelina Melnikova, gold medallist at the 2020 (2021) Olympics and World AA Champion in 2021 and Viktoria Listunova, Olympic Gold Medallist and European AA Champion in 2021.  Newcomer Diana Kustova, who has yet to compete at senior international level because of the ban on Russian participation in international competition, is also expected to do well.

The RGF confirms via Telegram.  Angelina Melnikova attended the Congress in Prague and gave a speech. ‘ ✅ The European Gymnastics Congress voted to reinstate Russian athletes' eligibility for competitions under the organization's auspices. This opens access for artistic and rhythmic gymnastics to qualifying tournaments for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Melnikova withdrawn from Bundesliga

  Angelina Melnikova has issued a statement about her participation in the Bundesliga.     The mayor of Chemnitz has withdrawn the gymnast’s invitation to participate in the final.     Angelina’s words: ‘I didn't receive an invitation to the Bundesliga final. Unfortunately, the public attention and political discussions were much greater than the organizers expected. I am grateful to TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz for the opportunity to participate in the semi-finals and, most importantly, for their respectful and kind attitude. In Germany, I received tremendous support from spectators, athletes, coaches, and referees. Ksenia Afanasyeva takes retirement

Leading Russian gymnast since 2007, Ksenia Afanasyeva has retired from gymnastics for medical reasons, reports Alexei Fililov from R Sport.   Valentina Rodionenko explained that Ksenia has a serious kidney illness. She is in hospital and will take not just days but weeks to recover. Afanasyeva is not just a brilliant gymnast but also a kind, humourous and intelligent team captain.  Her presence will be missed by both spectators and fellow competitors in Rio. Ksenia's place on the Russian team travelling to Rio on Sunday will be taken by the experienced and well prepared Evgenia Shelgunova.
