'If the Russia Cup does not work out I will finish my career and move on to coaching'

- I have not been training, until July 25, I have a little break.  Then I'll start to train in St. Petersburg. I haven't been invited to centralized training with the Russian national team at the training base,  "Round Lake".  My health is all right. Sometimes, I have back pain, but I'm used to it (laughs). I have had back problems for ten years, I put up with it.

- I did terribly at the Russian Championships in March!  After last year's World Championships in China, where we won the bronze medal in the team competition, I, unfortunately, relaxed a great deal, put on some weight. I was supposed to compete at a tournament in France, but couldn't. I stopped training, and until mid-February hardly went to the gym at all. I wanted to finish with the sport completely. But I had to represent the St Petersburg team at the Russian Championships in Penza.   ... I was not ready. Nobody could prepare properly for a competition in two weeks ... During the competition, I decided to compete only on vault and uneven bars.

- In mid-May, you were on the "Dityatin Cup." What are the goals set for this tournament?
- In mid-May, at the Dityatin Cup, I did what I could -vault - where I came first and uneven bars, where I did better than in the Russian Championships.  However, I came second to Elisabeth Seitz, whose D score was 6.6, while mine was 5.9.   ...   I really wanted to go to the Universiade, but unfortunately, after the Russian championship I was removed from the list for training. Of course, I was very upset. But I am to blame for all that has happened.

- I will participate in the Russia Cup!   I will finally decide on my routines - and whether to do the all around - a week before the competition.   I can't say what my goals will be, that will depend on my form. If I do well, I will join the team to prepare for the Olympic Games.  I will continue to train, I will fight for a ticket to Rio 2016. And if it does not work out - I will finish my career and move on to coaching.

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...

Who will travel to Berne? A Russian mystery

Aliya Mustafina and team candidate Seda Tutkhalyan - both from Moscow Five days left before the MAG European Championships open in Switzerland, and Russian gymnast Nikita Nagorny is posting videos of himself practicing a full twisting Roche vault - I wonder if he will compete it in Berne?  The men's team seems fairly well prepared and ready to travel as announced some weeks ago - Kuksenkov, Belyavski, Ignatyev, Nagorny, Ablyazin.  But the composition of the women's team, who will travel to their first major competition of 2016 next week, seems somewhat undecided.  Will Natalia Kapitonova make her major senior debut in June, or will Seda Tutkhalyan, her dynamic yet unpredictable rival, grace Russia's team?  Or will other gymnasts be brought into play; will further, unexpected, changes be made? Aliya Mustafina - new interview

Aliya in her new Olympic Games outfit.  The teams were kitted out at the Bosco Olympic centre in Moscow last week 'Europeans went quite well, for me personally and for the team.  There were no big blunders or falls and we were able to show a good result.  If we continue to work in the same way as we approach the Olympics, everything will be fine ... Although of course we will need to do a little more in Rio.  For the Olympic Games, everything will be right.
