Sovietski Sport interview with gold medallist Aliya Mustafina - Lupita translates

It’s so wonderful that it seems unbelievable! Aliya Mustafina, who came back to gymnastics after a serious injury, became Olympics bars champion yesterday in London. For 12 years we haven’t had a bars Olympics champion!  The last time, it was Svetlana Khorkina in Sydney.

But it’s not the first time that Mustafina makes history.
by Inessa Rasskazova, Sovietski Sport

She is very silent, introverted; sometimes you don’t get two words from her. She has a strong character; she is incredibly talented... and absolutely unpredictable.

Before the Olympics, national coach Valentina Rodionenko told us:

- I expect anything from Mustafina. With her you never know what to expect. This year, after her injury in Berlin, everything has been difficult for her. She cried at every training session. Aliya was doing beam. She fell. She cried. Went back to the beam. Fell and cried again. It’s difficult for her for another reason: Aliya is a talent and she’s not used to hard work. Everything was easy for her. Аnd now she has to work hard. Yet, I have big hopes for her in London. Aliya is able to concentrate in the important moment. The pressure of the audience, the judges, the rivals don’t exist for her when she competes. She concentrates and performs so well you have to take hats off to her!

Yesterday, in London at the Greenwich Arena, Aliya Mustafina expressed all her genuine beauty. Unfortunately, Viktoria Komova was not able to stand up to her level. She cried so much that she was not able to explain her mistakes, apart from a not so good dismount. She added that she doesn’t know if she will stay in gymnastics. The two silver medals that she has won in London are not a success for the most talented and polished gymnast in the world.

We feel sad for Vika, but we had to wait for Aliya’s performance. Mustafina competed after the most dangerous rivals, including British gymnast Elizabeth Tweddle, considered as the favourite. But Tweddle, after having surprised the audience with incredible elements, didn’t land well.

When Mustafina went to the podium with a steel light in her eyes, the name of the Chinese gymnast – He Kexin – was flashed on the first line of the board. She was first with a high score: 15.933.

Yet we know how Mustafina is able to perform bars. Here, in London, during the AA final, dozens of  spectators shouted with astonishment.

She had to do only what she is able to do.

-Aliya, when the British gymnast didn’t nail her dismount, what did you think?

I had never seen such a smile on Mustafina’s face.
- Celebrating too early is not good, and I didn’t celebrate her mistake. I only thought that, if my rivals had committed errors, it would be easier for me. I couldn’t make errors.

She didn’t make any mistake. Nowhere. And she nailed her dismount!

- You are unpredictable for your coaches and – for yourself as well? Do you know what to expect of yourself and when?

- (Laughs) No!

Comments

  1. Ha ha ha - love her comment about not knowing what to expect of herself. Very honest for a teenage girl. Also, I'm glad the writer pointed out that Mustafina is an introvert - that seems to be something that NBC, in its many broadcasts touting her as "difficult" and a "diva," never considered. She's become my favorite gymnast.

  2. She' become my favorite gymnast too.
For her skills, talent, strenght and the most for her natural beauty.
As a big fan, I 'm taking the chance to give her my advice :
first "Protect yourself all time", (risk of injuries)
second: From now, Physics first, Gymnastics second".
    What a beautiful young lady!
    What a fascinating 2012 Olympics!

Viktoria Komova - back pain has forced me to step down

I awoke this morning to a very simple statement from Viktoria Komova, on her vk.com site, which Papa Liukin has translated (via the IG forum): 'Dear friends, fans, and gymnastics lovers. Unfortunately back pain isn't allowing me to train to my full potential and get ready for competitions. I've made the very difficult decision to stop training and take care of my health. I want to thank everyone for their support! Without your love and warmth it would've been more difficult to go all the way. Thanks everyone and see you soon! Love and kisses.' Well, first of all, good wishes and best of luck to Viktoria, who has struggled since 2012 to re-establish herself fully as a competitive gymnast, whose talent was so great that she secured gold on bars at two different World Championships, four years apart, whose career was littered with controversy, who must be allowed to live her life as she wishes.   I know that the 'gymternet' will now be overflowing...

Aliya Mustafina - 'I'm just trying to stay healthy'

A brief interview with the World and Olympic Champion from All Sport is summarised below. Russian national gymnastics continues to prepare for the World Championships, which will be held October 3-12 in Nanning (China). Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina told Mary Staroverova about her health and about preparations for the competition. - In June, I went to Germany to solve the problem with my ankle.  I had a small operation to clean the joints of a build-up of bone particles.  Nothing serious was evident, and the operation went well.  Now I have to tumble.  But there is still some discomfort, a slight pain at full load, and I can not tumble at full force.  For the time being, I try to go easy on my legs.  After the Russia Cup I will have to fully prepare for Worlds. That is just one month.   Even if I'm not tumbling, I will keep myself in good shape, and that should suffice (smiles). - I can't say if it is a different pain to before Europeans, because at...

Olga Mostepanova - from beautiful daydream to World Champion

Young Olga in her white leotard and orange hair bows, at her first international competition in Wembley, 1980 I had only been in the Olympiski Stadium, Moscow, for a few moments when it happened: I found myself surrounded by a little army of tiny children, excitedly chattering away in Russian, a language I don't speak.   I strained my ears and heard the names : Aliya, Nastia, Ksenia; I was swept along by this blizzard of pigtails, giggles and pretty eyes; and suddenly I lost myself, and started looking for Olga Mostepanova amongst them.  She might have been there, but (now in her forties) it is more likely that she was hard at work in her own gym, helping a young gymnast learn how to do a walkover on beam. Mostepanova was always like that, even as a child: her gymnastics appeared like a beautiful daydream, but the reality was infinitely more prosaic.  The exquisite plasticity that made her a Champion, the beautiful line for which she is famous, were the product ...
