Senior team final - WAG Europeans 2012 - start lists

Don't miss these start lists for tomorrow's battle, which begins at 3.00 pm Brussels time.  I will be there.
Russia's working order currently remains unchanged from Thursday's qualifications, so obviously the girls are expected to make amends for their rather shaky performances.  I hope they can at least regain some confidence.

In fact - let's hope that all the teams perform to their best!  Good luck, girls!

  1. Those who came second today are the obvious favorites for London. Let's be serious here. If Komova doing 2 events, Aliya just having started to train floor and vault and Ksenia Afanasyeva back home with her World title is BARELY enough for going-at-full-strenght Romania to manage a win, it is as obvious as Aliya being a champion. Stucking her DTY today and posting a 15.8 on bars (not even in full difficulty), splendid work. She spoke for all Russia in terms of how seriously they should be taken. To me, they won big time.

  2. I would tend to agree but with the cautionary note that the team comp format is rather a lottery and does not favour the risky approach of our favourites.
The Rom team is very confident and feisty. The scores reflected their position as the strongest team this weekend but might be difficult to replicate in London where there will be no clear number 1.
In the meantime congratulations to B and B for creating yet another winning team. And to the Russian girls for putting up a real fight. It was great to see Aliya in particular retrieve her smile.
    More on Monday.

  3. The Russian Federation proves unable to put together a team with old gymnasts and juniors, while other teams have older and more experienced gymnasts. Why is Pavlova not training with them? Nabieva? What about talentful Dementieva? They just act as they did during the Soviet period, with three teams and 30 gymnasts ready to perform. Times have changed!

  4. In my opinion Pavlova is out of the running (a) because her knee would not withstand the rigours of full training and Lake Krugloye, and the team needs all gymnasts to participate equally (b) because she let the team down so very badly in Beijing ... she really did. Mistakes are part of gymnastics, but to have those errors when she did, in the way they were made was unforgiveable.
I believe Nabieva is back at Krugloye after a short period at home in St Petersburg trying to get back into shape. Alexandrov says he has only a little hope that she will be strong enough to compete in London.
Dementieva has a niggling knee injury that is preventing her from working at full strength.
Russia doesn't seem to have the same strength in depth as the Soviet Union, but then the Soviets had multiple Republics from which to draw their teams, and a sporting infrastructure that was second to none.
Russia's sporting infrastructure is currently being rebuilt with massive injections of cash from the government and sponsors like VTB but the Russian team is currently managing a legacy of thin participation that will probably take decades to overcome.

Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...

Who will travel to Berne? A Russian mystery

Aliya Mustafina and team candidate Seda Tutkhalyan - both from Moscow Five days left before the MAG European Championships open in Switzerland, and Russian gymnast Nikita Nagorny is posting videos of himself practicing a full twisting Roche vault - I wonder if he will compete it in Berne?  The men's team seems fairly well prepared and ready to travel as announced some weeks ago - Kuksenkov, Belyavski, Ignatyev, Nagorny, Ablyazin.  But the composition of the women's team, who will travel to their first major competition of 2016 next week, seems somewhat undecided.  Will Natalia Kapitonova make her major senior debut in June, or will Seda Tutkhalyan, her dynamic yet unpredictable rival, grace Russia's team?  Or will other gymnasts be brought into play; will further, unexpected, changes be made? If head coach Valentina Rodionenko's recent announcement is to be believed, it is a simple case of replacing the injured Maria Paseka (a vault specialist) with Natalia ...

Aliya Mustafina - new interview

Aliya in her new Olympic Games outfit.  The teams were kitted out at the Bosco Olympic centre in Moscow last week 'Europeans went quite well, for me personally and for the team.  There were no big blunders or falls and we were able to show a good result.  If we continue to work in the same way as we approach the Olympics, everything will be fine ... Although of course we will need to do a little more in Rio.  For the Olympic Games, everything will be right. 'My knee [Aliya suffered a torn meniscus for which she had surgery last November] is all right, there are no problems with it, I am not worried. 'We will try to fight for first place. But we will be happy with any medals . As usual, our main rivals will be the teams of America, China and the UK. 'It will now be very, very difficult to fight Simone Biles [in the AA] because she has a very large D score. In general, in the individual competition, my goal is just to perform well. The most important thing in the Olymp...
