The Russian team for Tokyo - some photos and links

I wanted to give you some links to the Federation's website where you will find some important information. But first, look here at some beautiful pictures of the Russian girls during a control workout attended by Russian Minister for Sport, Valeri Mutko. It's great to see them all looking relaxed and confident, with Aliya Mustafina amongst the fold. I read on the IG forum that Mustafina will be travelling with the Russian team to Tokyo to provide moral support - not on the competition floor, but from the stadium.  If this is true, I think it's great both for the team and for Aliya.

Russian Head Coach names Russian team for Worlds - This is essentially a rehash of the Novosti article linked to on this blog on the 23rd September, including Paseka in the team

Andrei Rodionenko confirms Russian women's team for worlds.  'Final' announcement made on the 27th September including Inshina in the place of Maria Paseka

Alexander Balandin discusses his recent injury and the chances of Pluzhnikov at worlds.

Sergei Khorokhodin discusses the Russian men's teams chances at Tokyo, mentioning in particular young blood Emin Garibov.

The RGF confirms via Telegram.  Angelina Melnikova attended the Congress in Prague and gave a speech. ‘ ✅ The European Gymnastics Congress voted to reinstate Russian athletes' eligibility for competitions under the organization's auspices. This opens access for artistic and rhythmic gymnastics to qualifying tournaments for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In trampoline, athletes can qualify for the Olympics without going through European competitions. 🗳 Delegates from 46 of the 50 countries that are members of European Gymnastics participated in the vote. Melnikova withdrawn from Bundesliga

  Angelina Melnikova has issued a statement about her participation in the Bundesliga.     The mayor of Chemnitz has withdrawn the gymnast’s invitation to participate in the final.     Angelina’s words: ‘I didn't receive an invitation to the Bundesliga final. Unfortunately, the public attention and political discussions were much greater than the organizers expected. I am grateful to TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz for the opportunity to participate in the semi-finals and, most importantly, for their respectful and kind attitude. In Germany, I received tremendous support from spectators, athletes, coaches, and referees. A sports arena is a place where athletes meet each other and demonstrate their abilities in their favorite sport. Ksenia Afanasyeva takes retirement

Leading Russian gymnast since 2007, Ksenia Afanasyeva has retired from gymnastics for medical reasons, reports Alexei Fililov from R Sport.   Valentina Rodionenko explained that Ksenia has a serious kidney illness. She is in hospital and will take not just days but weeks to recover. Afanasyeva is not just a brilliant gymnast but also a kind, humourous and intelligent team captain.  Her presence will be missed by both spectators and fellow competitors in Rio. Ksenia's place on the Russian team travelling to Rio on Sunday will be taken by the experienced and well prepared Evgenia Shelgunova.
