Two for Tokyo

We're all wondering ... who will make the Russian team this autumn? With Mustafina out of the mix, and Komova looking doubtful, it will surely be down to Dementyeva and Nabieva to provide the fireworks, Afanasyeva the backbone ... but who will back them up?

Will the Russians look to well-tested veterans like Kurbatova and Semenova to baseline the team, or will relative newcomers provide some zest and depth to round out the picture? Can the Russians surprise us by progressing some of their juniors to senior level?

The names of Maria Paseka and Tatiana Sovolyova come to mind ... Paseka vault and floor, Sovolyova bars and beam. It's quite some time since either have been seen competitively, but I dare bet they will be encouraged to train as hard they can to take their opportunity ...

    I would cry with joy if Semenova and/or Sovolyova were at Worlds. I do expect they'll take Belokobylskaya after her success at Euros.

    Hi Mr Singingtelegram, what tune is your comment set to?
    I agree actually - unaccountably Belokobylskaya slipped my mind as I was preparing this post. But she is a wonderful gymnast on floor and on beam - I think she will be in contention for a place on the team.

    I like Belok... Yulia very well. She has beautiful gymnastics and I wouldn't mind at all seeing her at Worlds. I would just be soo happy to see Semenova or Sovolyova competing there because I love them both so much. Does that answer your question?

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...

Dmitrieva to replace Mustafina in Glasgow

    Dmitrieva in training this summer  The Russian Worlds team line up changed today as Valentina Rodionenko announced via Tass that Aliya Mustafina would be replaced in Glasgow by Anastasia Dmitrieva.  Aliya withdrew her place in the team as she was not ready to compete, but will travel to Scotland as a guest of the Russian team.  'Her support is crucial to our girls in such an important competition', said Rodionenko (source - http://tass.ru/sport/2325851). Dmitrieva's strengths are on floor and beam.  At best, her flighty double layout on floor, together with elegant presentation, make her a natural for a spot on the senior national team.  If she were to compete at Worlds it would be an opportunity to develop her competitive maturity.  Second place on both beam and floor at the Rusudan Sikharulidze International tournament are her best senior international results so far, and domestically she appears regularly in finals.  At the Russia...
