Moskovskiy Komsomolets - 'A Frightening Championships'

Devyatovski and Alexandrov put forward their opinions of the forthcoming World Championships in Fukushima in an English Language translation of an article available here.

A representative of the Japanese Federation has visited Lake Krugloye to discuss arrangements at the world championships and to try to reassure competitors of the safety of the environment.  Russia is the only country to be favoured with such a visit.

Devyatovski's reaction is on the emotional side: he points out that the gymnasts will have to be there for a minimum of ten days and that the gymnasts are likely to be distracted by their own security concerns.  He finishes his interview: 'Can you guarantee that I'll be able to have a child afterwards?'

Alexandrov is more pragmatic, pointing out the sporting political pressures the Russians were under to agree to compete in Japan, in particular the fact that next year a new FIG President will be up for election and of course that qualification for London rests on this year's World Championships.  He also highlights that  the Russian government had declared Japan a safe territory back in April and that the Sports Ministry has no power to act independently of that.

Of most interest gymnastically is Alexandrov's opinion that without Mustafina and Komova the American team will most probably have a clear advantage over Russia at Worlds if they are held in Japan.  Although clearly he thinks the competition is close --- because if the competition were held in Russia, a home advantage may be enough to sway things the Russians' way.

Nelli Kim - 'Russian gymnastics has closed in on itself' - Lupita translates

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Ed's note : much of the initial response to this interview - both here and in the wider gymternet -  has focussed on the detail of Kim's words and especially her comments about Viktoria Komova, and smiling.  But I think these have to be taken in context, and not too literally. Don't forget that just a day ago Andrei Rodionenko complained bitterly about the judging in Antwerp, calling Kim's behaviour 'aggressive'. Kim is responding to this here, and to the wider current context of Russian gymnastics.  What she is essentially saying to the Russian coach is 'get your own house in order, produce confident, disciplined, well trained gymnasts - stop complaining, do your job, and I will do mine.'   She goes about saying this in a somewhat long winded way and says some things along the way that seem contradictory, unfair, inappropriate even for th...

Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...

Dmitrieva to replace Mustafina in Glasgow

Dmitrieva in training this summer  The Russian Worlds team line up changed today as Valentina Rodionenko announced via Tass that Aliya Mustafina would be replaced in Glasgow by Anastasia Dmitrieva.  Aliya withdrew her place in the team as she was not ready to compete, but will travel to Scotland as a guest of the Russian team.  'Her support is crucial to our girls in such an important competition', said Rodionenko (source - http://tass.ru/sport/2325851). Dmitrieva's strengths are on floor and beam.  At best, her flighty double layout on floor, together with elegant presentation, make her a natural for a spot on the senior national team.  If she were to compete at Worlds it would be an opportunity to develop her competitive maturity.  Second place on both beam and floor at the Rusudan Sikharulidze International tournament are her best senior international results so far, and domestically she appears regularly in finals.  At the Russia...
