Ukraine athletes ordered not to speak to Russia press, reports Sports Express

According to Sports Express, Ukrainian athletes have been ordered by their Govt not to speak to Russian press.  This includes our friends in the gymnastics hall, and AA silver medalist Oleg Verniaiev is in particular affected.  
It is so unpleasant to have politics imposed on athletes in this way and I really feel for everyone affected.  Oleg, Igor and all the team are members of the international gymnastics family and they have always been close to Russia.  Let's support Ukraine, and Oleg in particular, as much as we can during what must be a difficult time.  I'm sure that the gymnasts and coaches only want to continue to be friends.

    That really is a shame. Those athletes could tell Putin to get the hell out of their country.

Lupita has translated this ITAR-TASS interview with Nelli Kim.  It's controversial, to say the least. Ed's note : much of the initial response to this interview - both here and in the wider gymternet -  has focussed on the detail of Kim's words and especially her comments about Viktoria Komova, and smiling.  But I think these have to be taken in context, and not too literally. Aliya Mustafina - 'I'm just trying to stay healthy'

A brief interview with the World and Olympic Champion from All Sport is summarised below. Russian national gymnastics continues to prepare for the World Championships, which will be held October 3-12 in Nanning (China). Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina told Mary Staroverova about her health and about preparations for the competition. - In June, I went to Germany to solve the problem with my ankle.  I had a small operation to clean the joints of a build-up of bone particles.  Nothing serious was evident, and the operation went well.  Now I have to tumble.  But there is still some discomfort, a slight pain at full load, and I can not tumble at full force.  For the time being, I try to go easy on my legs.  After the Russia Cup I will have to fully prepare for Worlds. Injury updates - Mustafina, Komova, Afanasyeva, and Garibov

Many thanks to the All Around and to Laerke and Nico at Gymfever who are keeping me up to date while I am on a Greek holiday in the sunshine.  Please bear with my brevity as I seek to update my readers while enjoying a holiday cup of tea amongst the mosquitoes on my patio . Andrew Rodionenko has confirmed via Tass Ksenia Afanasyeva and Emin Garibov will be out of competition for the remainder of the year.  They are currently in Germany where they will remain for rehab.  Garibov has had surgery to both shoulders and Afanasyeva to her ankle. Rodionenko hopes that Komova (ankle) will be fit to compete at Worlds on bars at least. Mustafina has had surgery to her ankle, (which has been bothering her since before the Olympics according to an interview with Elena Vaitsekhovskaya published in Sports Express and in translation on this blog back in August 2012).  Mustafina is the only gymnast who will be exempt from the Russia Cup...
