WAG AA results

Congratulations to all the medalists, including Simone, who wins for the third time winning, Gabrielle, who has completed a comeback after a break since Olympics, and Larissa who overcame a mountain of disappointment after qualifications.
Russia's promise, Seda, had quite a good first AA competition, but fell on beam and lost rather a lot of marks.  But she is still one of the world's top gymnasts and will do better next time!

  1. Congratulations Simone . Definitely one of the greatest ever. Grace and power. I definitely prefer her style to Larissa. It's a personal preference but I find Larissa to be so jerky and hurried in her movement. Those who criticize American gymnast for lack of style or grace seem to ignore this.

    1. I think Simone is amazing but I prefer Larisa's gymnastics. She really enjoys herself on floor and dances to the music. That's rare these days with the amount of difficulty expected in a routine.

  2. She's a talented gymnast for sure, but on a game day she failed miserably. So many unnecessary mistakes, which prevent her from being a great one

  3. I wonder if the Russian coaches adopt a similar approach to the article writer. Seda has failed on 2/3 beam routines thus far at Worlds and somehow she is one of the Worlds top gymnast which World are we speaking of? Seda and her coach need to rework her balance beam routine it is obvious she cannot perform it consistently. In addition, Seda has yet to score above 14 for any of her floor routines in Glasgow so she also needs to work there and on bars then and only then would she be considered World Class.

    1. She is one of the world's leading gymnasts because she qualified to the Worlds AA final and is therefore in the top 24. She finished 6th in qualifying and 15th in the final. She is not the only gymnast to fall; they all fall. The important thing is that, like Seda, they acknowledge their mistakes and continue to work hard. Apart from Jurca, Seda was the only 1999 born gymnast in the top 15 in the AA at Worlds, and a first year senior.
I agree about beam and floor, by the way, and in an interview which I have not yet been able to discuss on this blog Grebyonkin has mentioned that the coaches need to do the very same things as you mention.

    2. Yes, I think Seda's day will come. She has Mustafina's attitude.

    3. The problem is not that Seda falls its the frequency in which she and the other Russians falls. She has potential but she have tons of work to do to be a gymnast who can contend for medals. I don't think she will be a factor for Rio provided Mustafina,Afanaseyeva,Paseka and Komova are healthy. The Russian program as a whole has to restructure beam and floor will they have enough time until Rio to rectify these deficiencies I am unsure.

    4. They have killed the sport and the coaches' imagination.

By the way, Seda has not improved enough. We all had greater expectations. She lacks difficult elements and she doesn't show she is enjoying what she does. Look at Steingruber, for instance, or Iordache!

By the by, review Biles' BB routine and her score. It's so sad!

It makes me crazy when I see Douglas and Biles' feet. And what about Biles' tommy? Has she ever learn how to have a well aligned body position?

    5. Can anybody explain me what happend with Daria, She supposed to be at the AA, doesn't she?
About Simone, can't say any word against, she is wonderful, Seda is too young a need more experience and of course, need to focus on her exercises in floor and bean.
Much work for Russia if they want medals at Rio

    6. Daria had an unfortunately low score in qualifications so she did not make the top 24 and didn't get the chance to compete in the AA. She was very close as a reserve though. Hopefully Russia will fare better in event finals.

  4. I think Seda did beautifully. But she won't be a threat to anyone in Rio if she can't prove she can stay up when it matters. She was amazing on floor though.

UPDATE 23/9 - Russian WAG team for Nanning confirmed

Daria Spiridonova will compete at her first World Championships this autumn.  Picture : RGF Natalia Kalugina has confirmed the Russian team for Nanning : Aliya Mustafina, Maria Kharenkova, Tatiana Nabieva,Ekaterina Kramarenko, Alla Sosnitskaya, Daria Spiridonova.  Reserve : Polina Fyodorova Here is a paraphrased translation of a comment by Natalia Kalugina on her Facebook page : 'Aliya has confidence in competition and she is, kind of, a coach to this team.  In Europe she succeeded in this role and she has told the coaches that she even liked it. The main fighting force will be Kharenkova, Sosnitskaya and Spiridonova.  Accordingly, the strongest apparatus will be beam (Marina Bulashenko With God!).  The Chinese women, of course, have been known to win that apparatus, but if one falls, they all fall.   Alla Sosnitskaya could compete in the vault final, and - in theory - on the floor. On bars, of course, Russia will probably lose to the Chinese women, but the...

Judging Komova and Douglas - like comparing the Mariinsky Theatre ... and a Disco

Lupita translates an article about the women's all around from today's Sovietski Sport. OLYMPICS OR LAS VEGAS CASINO? Aliya and Vika waited for Viktoria’s score for her floor, which closed the AA competition. Gabriella Douglas was completely alone, biting her lips. Douglas was not sure of anything, except that Aliya Mustafina, who stayed in gymnastics like a heroine, had won bronze and Komova…  In this instant it was decided to be, or not to be.  To be Olympic Champion, or not to be Olympic Champion. It’s over.  Vika drops her head on Aliya’s shoulder.  The judges have decided: Douglas! I choose the sentence "Douglas has been named Olympic AA champion".  I can explain when this happened.  It was not when Komova didn’t land her Amanar vault well. Her mistake on vault was not fatal.  It was still possible to make it up. They just didn’t allow her to do so. Douglas performed with pleasure and with luck.  She was overscored f...

Komova should have won!

It was a very tight battle in the North Greenwich arena today, with American Gabby Douglas beating out Viktoria Komova by a mere 0.259 points (see results below) and the legendary Aliya Mustafina sealing her comeback from that career-threatening injury with a well deserved bronze medal. Yes, she suffered a fall from beam after her Arabian somersault but elsewhere she was at her best, a real endorsement of the work of the Russian coaches in nursing her back to almost-top form since that fateful day in 2011. Komova had a faultless competition apart from a step on landing her Amanar vault. Frankly, she must feel utterly shattered after coming second once again by a very small margin to an American who was treated very generously by the judges. Komova soared and took every beam move to the max, rounding off with her rare double Arabian dismount in fine style; Douglas literally sidled along the beam, seeming frightened to take her feet off the apparatus for all but her somersaults. Kom...
