Coach Elfimov: Komova is preparing all around

In a Sports Express interview with Elena Vaitsekhovskaya, coach Gennadi Elfimov has confirmed that he and Komova are working together, thus confounding rumours that they had split up for good.  He says that Viktoria is preparing all around for the European Games in Baku, which will take place in June this year.

  1. That's a good news, she has a lot to prove as an AA player, missed her gymnastics so much ...

  2. Is it so wrong, after all that's happened up till now, that I am a bit skeptical and pessimistic about the outcome? I wish her luck all the same. If she wants to go the all around route, it will be the type of all arounder that can put up a decent, reliable score on anything for the team, and nothing too amazing except maybe on bars. That is all I see Vika capable of. And that's totally fine.

  3. I am not terribly optimistic about Vika's return after so much time (and I never was very optimistic even in 2013) but I think her continuing to train AA is still a good thing. If nothing else it makes her much more valuable for the team, if she can fill in on all events if necessary, especially since the current Russian team has quite a few specialists and not many strong AAers. It is good that Elfimov and Vika are still working together, as it would probably be a very big change at this late stage in the Olympic cycle for Vika to be working with a new coach. I hope she proves me wrong and comes back as a successful AAer.

  4. I was pleasantly impressed with the sneak peak of Komova's AA progress in Hungary. She was extremely powerful on floor, easily could have upped the difficulty on her passes. And a double twisting yurchenko is surely in the works for the upcoming European Games in Baku. If she's healthy, despite the disappointing last two years, I don't think she should be ruled out of at least a reasonable come back.

Russia Cup - the road to Nanning!

The Russian MAG and WAG teams take their preparation for World Championships in Nanning one step further this week, as key players compete in the annual Russia Cup in Penza.  There will be team, all around and event finals. The WAG team Last year the gymnasts were rather depleted and suffering the effects of injury; this year the national squad is still short of some of its top members, but has greater diversity and experience up and coming into the ranks, so it will be an interesting time.  Last year saw St Petersburg gymnast and fan favourite Tatiana Nabiyeva lead the all around, ahead of Alla Sosnitskaya, Anna Pavlova, Anna Rodionova, Ekaterina Kramarenko and Polina Fyodorova.  With the individual-only World Championships up coming in Antwerp, I remember writing that Russia might well decide to send a team of only three gymnasts, such was the paucity of available talent.  The final reckoning saw Russia fare a little better than this, although performance lacked depth and re
