Russian National Championships for women - Penza

 The Russian Championships for women will take place in Penza over the coming days.  The competition will give some indication of who might be going to the forthcoming European Championships in Brussels.  So far the RGF has mentioned that Mustafina, Afanasyeva, Dementieva, Belokobylskaya and Inshina are competing, although we have no news of Viktoria Komova.  Tatiana Nabieva will almost certainly be there.

19 March arrival
20 March podium training (10 am - 2:30 pm juniors; 3 -7:30 pm seniors)
21 March CI & CIV juniors 10 am - 2:30 pm; CI & CII seniors 4 - 8:30 pm
22 March C IV seniors 4-6 pm
23 March C II juniors 2:30 - 4 pm Candidates; 4 - 5:30 pm Masters
24 March CIII (V & UB ) juniors & seniors 11 am- 1 pm
25 March CIII (BB & FX ) juniors & seniors 11 am- 1 pm

The men's championships will take place from 4th to 8th April.

    I know that it has been reported on some of the forums that someone with a Sprashivai account in Vika's name has said (a) that she isn't going and (b) that it is because she is recovering from minor surgery - but this is not official and we do not know how reliable the information is.
    I will post any information from official sources.

    Thanks for the encouragement. I'll do my best to keep you up to date with everything I hear. There is now news available on the health of Komova, Dementieva and Mustafina which you'll be able to read in my updates.
    We'll have a new Russian Champion this week, which is exciting!
    I'd love to see Belokobylskaya do well - she is such a beautiful gymnast and I think she has hidden potential and personality.

    yes (i posted the first comment) i know that it's better to be careful with info online but i asked Alan Owen who runs the girls Official facebook pages if it's really her and he said that he asked and that it's her. But of course it's hard to be 100% sure, just wanted to let you know

Start lists are now available for tomorrow's senior team and event quals.  At present, the Russian roster  looks like this - Beam - Melnikova, Tutkhalyan, Mustafina Floor - Melnikova, Tutkhalyan, Mustafina  Vault - Melnikova, Tutkhalyan, Afanasyeva  Bars - Melnikova, Spiridonova, Mustafina  Things can still change, dear reader, but this is the most reliable official news we have.    It will be good to see all five members of the team compete - I am relieved that Mustafina isn't doing all four but worried for her legs on floor; delighted to see Melnikova and Tutkhalyan making such a strong contribution; and pleased that Afanasyeva is having a chance to try out her training, despite what might be a small injury.  Spiridonova is also looking good for bars, in fact to me she is underused here.   Good luck!  Udachi!  To all the team.  We are very excited to see you compete and do well! No Paseka for Russia in Berne

Barely two weeks will elapse before the WAG European Championships begin in Berne, Switzerland, and the news we had been fearing has been confirmed : world vault gold medallist Maria Paseka is  off the Russian team while she nurses a back injury.  This leaves Russia significantly weakened for the coming competition, with co-star Viktoria Komova also missing from the line-up.  It is a little disappointing, but it seems the right decision to rest the gymnasts so that they can be at their best when and where it really matters. Who will replace Paseka?  Valentina Rodionenko says that the youngster Natalia Kapitonova, who trains in Penza, has been chosen on the basis of her solid performances at national championships.  Well, we will have to wait and see - these announcements often turn out to be unreliable.   I personally would prefer to see the dynamic Seda Tutkhalyan be given a chance at this level, but Kapitonova has certainly shown herself to be more reliab...

 Visa Delays Leave Russia’s European Championship Plans in Doubt Russia will probably be unable to field full-strength teams at next week’s European Gymnastics Championships, according to the Russian Gymnastics Federation (RGF). Croatia has still not issued visas to most of Russia’s leading gymnasts, coaches and medical staff due to attend the championships. The applications were submitted several weeks ago; Angelina Melnikova even delivered hers in person. The team is booked to travel tomorrow and faces a seven-hour journey, including a connecting flight. With so little time remaining, Russia is unlikely to be able to send its strongest teams to Zagreb. As the European Championships are an important qualifying event, this could seriously disrupt the federation’s plans. The RGF regards the delay as a deliberate obstruction.
