Moscow World Cup - qualification and media links

Qualification results are now available at the Russian gymnastics federation website.

Anna Dementyeva features in the top three on bars, beam and floor with Afanasyeva providing some good back up on beam and floor and Kurbatova featuring reasonably soundly on bars and vault.  Chusovitina leads vault, Seitz bars, Millousi beam and Dementyeva floor.  The Russian team looks reasonably assured of at least some medals at this relatively modest competition.


Link here to a video report from Vesti in the run up to the competition, featuring footage of Mustafina training bars in a heavy leg brace and Afanasyeva training beam.  There are brief interviews with Mustafina and Dementyeva; Komova appears in the background, looking reasonably fit to me - could see no evidence of ankle strapping. 

Golutsotskov is also featured.

Viktoria Komova - apology

Viktoria wrote some hasty words last night in the heat of the moment.  We all have such times, when hurt feelings lead us to behave uncharacteristically.  It is not important what she said; it is important that Vika has reflected and wants us all to read this message which she published on VK.com this morning. "Dear friends! I want to apologize for my statements about American girls, about drugs, all my words were spoken on emotions. Of course I haven't any proof and didn't really mean it and so on... Artistry versus acrobatics???

Watching videos of this weekend's competitions - the qualification and all around rounds of the Russian championships, medal winners from the American Cup - I am struck, more and more, by the huge difference between the American and Russian schools of gymnastics. It led me to ask the question : do artistry and acrobatics have to be mutually exclusive? (I am afraid that I think naming 'American' gymnastics a 'school' is perhaps lending an undeserved dignity to work which has become excessively obsessed with the difficult and the consistent, but I am using the word here so as not to label unfairly those individual gymnasts who are blameless in the direction of their training.) The FIG's vision for gymnastics is said to embrace more artistry; at least the publicity it has put about on the subject of its new Code makes that fairly plain.  So perhaps the Russians, with their inconsistent brilliance and superior body carriage (Mustafina, Komova, Grishina, Afanasy...
