‘Maintaining law and order at Ozero Krugloye in 1980’ - à history from Lake Krugloye

I am grateful to the RGF for releasing this interesting historical account for our enjoyment.  The card is a souvenir from the 1980 Olympics, depicting Alexander Tkachev.  The autograph is none other than Maria Filatova!

'🥇A Historical Account of Maintaining Law and Order at Krugloe Lake During the 1980 Olympics

While everyone is keeping an eye on the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, we decided to recall the historic moments of Krugloe Lake during the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

🤫Especially for you, we found a historical account from a police officer who ensured security at our Training Center during the Olympics:

We selected and sent only the very best – the reliable and proven! The combined detachment, which included me, was tasked with carrying out its mission at the Krugloe Lake Olympic Base.

During the Olympics, a single attempt by an unaccredited Japanese journalist was thwarted; he somehow managed to get past the first checkpoint. But at the second, plainclothes officers were already waiting for the Japanese journalist. The athletes were given the most favorable treatment, ensuring that nothing would interfere with their Olympic medal winning efforts.

Certainly, our wonderful star gymnasts were especially beloved by the support staff (including the police): Davydova, Shaposhnikova, Kim, Zakharova, Naimushina... But the most beloved was the littlest and most spontaneous Mashenka Filatova.

By a lucky coincidence, she celebrated her birthday during the Olympics. Knowing this, we police officers went around the neighborhood and collected a huge bouquet of flowers. Local residents, upon learning who it was for, generously lavished the luxurious flowers on us and asked us to convey our best wishes for Mashenka's victory. That evening, upon the gymnastics team's return from Moscow, we ceremoniously presented the enormous bouquet to the pleasantly surprised birthday girl. I still have a signed photo of her as a memento of the occasion. And then came their Victory, and ours!

🤩 In the photo, you can see the young champion's autograph, received by the author.

If you were a participant in the historical events that took place on Lake Krugloe, tell us fascinating facts and share archival photos or videos. We'd be happy to share your story 😊'

The State of Gymnastics - 'Soviet' or 'American' style?

Lioudmilla Tourischeva, 1972 Olympic All Around champion in artistic gymnastics, was held up as an example of the ideal Soviet citizen.  Here she coaches one of the Soviet Union's leading gymnasts from the 1980 Olympics, Natalia Shaposhnikova The Soviet Union had a genius for lifting sport beyond the textbook, injecting the aesthetic where previously only goals had been in plain view.   This was not only manifest in gymnastics.  Do you remember the ‘Russian Five’, the players who elevated ice hockey to a creative sporting display, mesmerising their opponents and spectators with intricate patterns of play, so rhythmic and entertaining that they could have been set to music?   In gymnastics, a sport where the aesthetic counted as much as the outcome, it was this ability to create spectacle out of competition that resulted in the most extraordinary athletic performances.  The ‘Golden Era’, most commonly understood to cover the years from 1952-1...
