Ukraine Olympic Committee calls for IOC to review Melnikova's neutral status

 I can share with you the letter dated 30 April.  The image quality is poor, but if you take your time you will be able to read it.  


The reason for the review is not only Melnikova's registration as a candidate in Voronezh's regional elections, but also some fundraising events she has taken part in; and a picture of her with a 'Z' symbol, from the early part of the war.


It seems that since Russia withdrew its gymnasts from competition - just a few weeks ago - opinions have hardened in favour of the War.  Melnikova has retained her silence, but others in the gymnastics community are speaking out in favour of Russia.  


I'll not support these ideas.  But it's very easy for governments to influence their people.  Britain left the European Union on the back of some very questionable campaigning by leading politicians only a few years ago.  Donald Trump's government meetings are a quagmire of sycophantic nonsense as he destroys the world economy.  Now think of the power that Putin has, and the blatant lies that underpin his power.  


Sports are the low hanging fruit for politicians.  While I find some of what Russia is saying about the war to be execrable, Angelina's actions are only a young person trying to live a life in difficult circumstances.  I understand why her status is being questioned, but it's hard to point a finger.

  Croatia has denied visas to nine members of the Russian national gymnastics delegation. Croatia says the applications were refused because insufficient information was provided about the purpose of travel for those nine individuals. Russia disputes this explanation, arguing that more than 60 other gymnasts, coaches and officials received visas after submitting applications containing the same information. Significantly, three of the gymnasts denied visas — Angelina Melnikova, Anna Kalmykova and Viktoria Listunova — could reasonably have been expected to contend for medals in Zagreb. This has inevitably led to allegations that the visa refusals were intended to weaken Russia’s team.  Visa Delays Leave Russia’s European Championship Plans in Doubt Russia will probably be unable to field full-strength teams at next week’s European Gymnastics Championships, according to the Russian Gymnastics Federation (RGF). Croatia has still not issued visas to most of Russia’s leading gymnasts, coaches and medical staff due to attend the championships. The applications were submitted several weeks ago; Angelina Melnikova even delivered hers in person. The team is booked to travel tomorrow and faces a seven-hour journey, including a connecting flight. With so little time remaining, Russia is unlikely to be able to send its strongest teams to Zagreb. As the European Championships are an important qualifying event, this could seriously disrupt the federation’s plans. The RGF regards the delay as a deliberate obstruction.
