Nastya Ilyankova retired, helping young gymnasts at Round Lake

 Match TV reports:

First Vice President of the Russian Gymnastics Federation Vasily Titov told Match TV that retired Olympic silver medalist Anastasia Ilyankova is working with young athletes at the Ozero Krugloe base.

Ilyankova will turn 24 on January 12. In 2019, the gymnast became the European champion in the uneven bars, and in 2021, she won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics on the same apparatus.

❓ How did you react to Anastasia's decision to end her career?

💬 Ending a career is a personal matter for every athlete. It's a shame she decided to end it, she's a very talented gymnast. She's very strong on the uneven bars, she's a talented person. Unfortunately, there were injuries. Despite the fact that Anastasia is ending her career, she continues to be a part of the national team, but is no longer a member of the national team. She works with young athletes at the Ozero Krugloe base.

❓ A coach?

💬 No, but she helps.

❓ And if she expresses a desire to become a coach?

💬 We don’t refuse anyone. We try to help everyone who wants to coach. Aliya Mustafina is our head coach of the youth team, so we don’t abandon anyone. If Anastasia has a desire, there will be a place where she can prove herself, I think we will resolve the issue positively.

❓ Did Anastasia contact the federation for psychological and financial help after her father’s death?

💬 We support each member of the team. Anastasia contacted us, we helped her during a difficult period. And we will not leave her without support now, Titov told Match TV.

Listunova to compete in this weekend’s (7/2) Italian Serie A

If I find a link to any live streaming, I will post on my Facebook.   This is good news for Viktoria, an Olympic and European champion who has been unable to compete at the highest level for more than two years because of the IOC ban on Russia, and because of injury.   Viktoria is one of the gymnasts who is applying for neutral status.  She will have been returned to the international testing bank for anti-doping, but I don’t know when there will be a final decision on her status. Both Viktoria and Angelina travelled to Italy in the last few weeks - they spent time with Russian/Italian coach Anton Stolyar - but Angelina has now returned to train at Round Lake.  Not sure if this has any significance.  But it is really great to have Viktoria back in competitions, and visible.  Good luck to her whatever her plans.   https://youtu.be/oUUnTNdNyDg?si=lpsAcjqpapX_6qng UPDATE - Photos of Vika Listunova with Kayla Nemours and her Italian team this week.  V...

The State of the Art - Gymnastics in 2013

Just picked up Peter Aykroyd's 1987 book  International Gymnastics: Sport Art or Science?.  Seeing it reminded me that gymnastics is in a constant state of flux and change; its identity has been subject to debate and conflict since the earliest days of competitive gymnastics, well before it existed in the form we recognise today.  I want to try to talk about the state of the sport today, how it compares to past models, how it arrived at this point, and what are the questions arising. I make no apologies for publishing the picture comparisons on this page, which were created by Lifje.  Some have seemed to find them rather challenging in the past, but they are not airbrushed or altered in any way.  Yes, the pictures are purpose selected for the sake of comparison, but they express a truth about the direction the sport has taken over the past few years.  They are not so much about Russia versus America as artistry versus athletics.  I do not pretend...

Svetlana Boginskaya: I was always a bitch* in gymnastics

Svetlana Boginskaya, 15 years old, with her medals from the Seoul Olympics Nico translates the latest interview with gymnastics legend Svetlana Boginskaya, during a recent visit to her home country of Belarus. Svetlana Boginskaya: I was always a bitch* in gymnastics, so now I ask for forgiveness from everyone who came in contact with me. The National Olympic Committee of Belarus held a press conference with three-time Olympic Champion in artistic gymnastics, Svetlana Boginskaya. The meeting was devoted to the 25th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Seoul. In South Korea the Belarussian won two gold medals in the team competition and vault. As a gift to the Olympic Hall of fame, the famous gymnast, now living in the United States, donated one of her trophies that she won at the 1990 European Championships and a pennant for Best Female Athlete of the USSR in 1989. How happy we were when we could share with such stars as Boginskaya, Scherbo, and Ivankov,...
