European Gymnastics Championships v the Belarus Cup - relative scores

In view of the Russians' absence from Europeans, I thought it might be interesting to look at the top three scores at 'their' competition, the Belarus Cup, and make some comparisons to Europeans.  Hmph.  I'm not sure it is possible to make comparisons between the marking in one competition and another, actually ... but for the sake of interest, here are some of the key scores.  Does anyone want to do some technical/critical breakdowns of the scores?   Are the standards comparable?  How would the 1, 2, 3 at Euros be affected, if at all, if the top Russian or top two Russians had been present in Antalya, and all gymnasts scored consistently?

Videos of the Europeans are fairly easily available on Youtube.  If you want to see videos of the Belarus Cup, there are some available on Telegram, on the Karelian Gymnastics channel.  I'm not sure that I can link to them.

It would be interesting to know what you think, in any event.  Please leave comments!

  1. Comparing the D scores totally makes sense, not too sure about D+E .... one has to laugh seing Gerasimova at 56+
But yes Listunova is probably N°1 in Europe right now

  2. Listy could get close to 58 internationally but I'm not convinced Gerasimova can get anywhere close to 56. Maybe a high 54 to low 55 for her on a good day.

Remembering last summer - Nelli Kim, her judges and Viktoria Komova

In view of Nelli Kim's recent interview , Lupita and I thought it timely to revisit the performance of some of the WTC President's judges over past competitions ... this article from 27th August 2012 is reposted here, as a reminder. You will find a link to the FIG's newly published book of results at the Olympic Games here .  This year, they have broken down the judge's execution scores so you can see exactly how each judge evaluated the gymnasts' performances.  It makes for interesting reading - if only I had more time to analyse each judge's marking.  A skim reading already highlights multiple inconsistencies in individual judges' marks and makes you wonder why they bother with the jury at all. I have taken the time to look at the reference judges' scores for the top four in the women's all around.  The FIG explains here what their role is, and how they are selected.  I even used my calculator, which is a risky thing in my hands.  M...

Review of Russian WAG at the 2014 World Championships

The Russians during a team talk in training for the World Championships.  Courtesy RGF Bronze all the way for Russia then.  Beyond the euphoria and surprise of this morning's competition there doesn't really seem to be much to write home about. I am delighted for Aliya personally that the efforts she has made to help the team have provided her with some tangible result, but the principal feeling at the end of the competition is that of relief.  As Vaitsekhovskaya said in her article last week, there were no moments of shock and awe from the Russians, and that's what will be needed if they are to compete for gold medals in Rio (translation available here ). Let's consider a timeline of the competition : before, during and after. BEFORE The promise of a return to the Worlds stage by Viktoria Komova gave Russia a feeling of optimism pre-Russia Cup.  However, Viktoria's performance at this important competition gave little reason for celebra...

Breaking news - Stretovich in, Ignatyev out

Valentina Rodionenko earlier today confirmed that Ivan Stretovich will take the place of Nikita Ignatyev on the main Russian gymnastics team.  19 year old Stretovich, from Novosibirsk, Siberia, is Russian Cup champion on the pommel horse and high bar.  His first major senior competition was the 2014 World Championships where he performed on pommels only.  Stretovich was originally selected as a reserve and the decision to bring him onto the main team was based on his superior performance quality compared to Ignatyev, according to Rodionenko. For the women, the news is that Angelina Melnikova is recovering well from the hamstring injury she aggravated at one of the final control competitions at Round Lake.  Valentina says that she is back to training her full routines again.   Sources - MAG - http://rsport.ru/rio2016_gymnastics/20160802/1011352078.html WAG - http://rsport.ru/rio2016_gymnastics/20160802/1011409100.html New - video of the girls training, ...
