It's official - Kuksenkov can compete!

The Russian Anti-Doping Agency RUSADA has now lifted the temporary suspension of Nikolai Kuksenkov, reports R Sport.

This follows on from an announcement by the World agency, WADA, detailing the terms of a possible 'amnesty' for athletes with very low levels of the drug Meldonium in their bloodstream, who had not taken the drug since January.

In related news, Russian team doctor Vladimir Timonkin has explained that the Russian women have not taken Meldonium for some years.  Timonkin says that the benefits of the drug were insufficient to justify its use.  He is a well known and trusted face on the Russian national team, and has been team doctor for fifteen years.

  2. Romainan WAG in 4th at Rio test event with Germany, France and Belgium to go. I know this blog is on Russia, but you should make a post about the sad end of Romanian Gymnastics, and comparing with the situation in Russia.

  3. Especially considering how fast Romania has fallen... from 3rd place in 2012. Could the same thing happen to Russia?

  4. I have written a post on this. I do not think Russia will fall in the same way, although the competition formats now make competition results very unpredictable for every country apart from perhaps the USA.

    1. The article was published today, but I wonder if the interview with Titov took place before the big WADA and RUSADA announcements last week? They seemed to confirm fairly unequivocally that Kuksenkov was in the clear, at least in the immediate future, and it would take some time to report and redact an interview of this length.

    2. Interview was today morning about VTB ARENA and most lack WCh 2018 and Infantino Moscow visit. You can find most quotes from it on other russia sources. it's bad for Kuksenkov because VTB has conflict itself with WADA

    3. OK - well we do need to wait for clarification then. There is an article in local Vladimir news saying that Kuksenkov will compete at Europeans so there are conflicting reports ...

Komova should have won!

It was a very tight battle in the North Greenwich arena today, with American Gabby Douglas beating out Viktoria Komova by a mere 0.259 points (see results below) and the legendary Aliya Mustafina sealing her comeback from that career-threatening injury with a well deserved bronze medal. Yes, she suffered a fall from beam after her Arabian somersault but elsewhere she was at her best, a real endorsement of the work of the Russian coaches in nursing her back to almost-top form since that fateful day in 2011. Komova had a faultless competition apart from a step on landing her Amanar vault. Frankly, she must feel utterly shattered after coming second once again by a very small margin to an American who was treated very generously by the judges. Komova soared and took every beam move to the max, rounding off with her rare double Arabian dismount in fine style; Douglas literally sidled along the beam, seeming frightened to take her feet off the apparatus for all but her somersaults. ‘My daughter likes gymnastics. For us, this is the big success’. Aliya Mustafina talks to Match TV

Via VK.com.  Google translate A big interview with Aliya Mustafina was published on MATCH!. We provide a small excerpt below, and the full version is available on the website at the link below  ❓ Aliya, you are now the head coach of the junior artistic gymnastics team. What does your typical day look like? 💜 My current life is similar to what it was when I was competing. In the morning, I have breakfast and go to work by 9:00, we train for four hours, have lunch, rest and train for another three hours. During the training camp, the athletes live at the base. They live and train on the same territory. ❓ Do you manage the gymnasts' personal trainers or do you evenly distribute the responsibilities? 💜 We work in contact with the personal trainers, I listen to their opinions. For example, if the trainer believes that their athlete needs to be given a little rest or do fewer repetitions of a particular exercise, we do so. ❓ Describe the current generation of children. Do they nee...

'Mustafina is no longer in pain' - Valentina Rodionenko

Picture of Aliya Mustafina, courtesy of RGF Valentina Rodionenko has provided some updates on the Russian teams and how their preparation for Worlds (Nanning, China, 3 to 12 October) is progressing, via Allsports (http://www.allsportinfo.ru/index.php?id=84328) - The teams are now at camp in Italy, in two small towns close to Milan, by the sea, where the girls travelled on 29th June and the men on 1 July.  The athletes aren't only training, they can also relax. - Komova is working out at Round Lake, she didn't go to Italy.  We will see how she does at the Russia Cup, which will be held late August in Penza. Tatiana Nabiyeva is looking good in training and the other girls are also working.  Ksenia Afanasyeva won't have time to prepare for Worlds, and Anastasia Grishina's participation is also in doubt, we just don't know if she will qualify for the team.   We have hopes for Aliya Mustafina.  As always, she is our number one.  It would be great if there were t...
