List of competitors - Russia Cup

The national team in training for Worlds, with their coaches

WAG - http://sportgymrus.ru/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/spisok-uchastnikov-zhen.pdf

Pleased to see all the usual suspects are registered, plus Daria Mikhailova, Anastasia Grishina, Anastasia Sidorova, Viktoria Kuzmina and Tatiana Nabiyeva.
As we have read before, Aliya Mustafina isn't competing here.

The oldest gymnast competing is Daria Elizarova (1991) and the youngest Daria Skrypnik (2000).  There is a field of 34 women.

MAG - sportgymrus.ru/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/spiski-uchastnikov-muzh.pdf

In MAG we have a total of 55 gymnasts competing.  29 year old Andrei Perevoznikov is the oldest man present, and the youngest is 1997 born Sergei Kryvunets.  Rings specialist Alexander Balandin is the main omission from the list of competitors - he is having more shoulder surgery this week, so we wish him all the best of luck in his recovery.

The competition begins on Wednesday with the MAG and WAG team events.  We very much hope that as usual the RGF will provide live streaming; I will provide links as they arise (check my Facebook and Twitter feeds which are updated more rapidly than this, the main blog).

Good luck to all the competitors!  Do your best!

Simone and the others - results and reflections

In the end, it was as predicted : Simone and the others, with Simone's teammate, Alexandra Raisman, providing the back up.  I do not need to point out that, by definition, the Americans are scoring significantly higher marks than the rest of the field.  Congratulations to them! Aliya Mustafina finished in third place.  The 2012 bronze medalist led the competition after vault and uneven bars, but had a very nervous outing on beam that might have taken a less experienced gymnast out of the medals.  A bravura performance on floor brought Aliya back though to confirm her third place all around.  From her senior debut in 2010 to today, Mustafina has continuously set high standards of grace.    It is the first time since 2000 that a gymnast (Amanar) has medalled in the all around at two consecutive Olympics, and  if Aliya can medal on Saturday's uneven bars final, she will once again be Russia's biggest medal winner of the women's gymnastics.  Russ...

Komova should have won!

It was a very tight battle in the North Greenwich arena today, with American Gabby Douglas beating out Viktoria Komova by a mere 0.259 points (see results below) and the legendary Aliya Mustafina sealing her comeback from that career-threatening injury with a well deserved bronze medal. Yes, she suffered a fall from beam after her Arabian somersault but elsewhere she was at her best, a real endorsement of the work of the Russian coaches in nursing her back to almost-top form since that fateful day in 2011. Komova had a faultless competition apart from a step on landing her Amanar vault. Frankly, she must feel utterly shattered after coming second once again by a very small margin to an American who was treated very generously by the judges. Komova soared and took every beam move to the max, rounding off with her rare double Arabian dismount in fine style; Douglas literally sidled along the beam, seeming frightened to take her feet off the apparatus for all but her somersaults. Kom...
